For the first time in its 24 year history, Worfield Golf Club has qualified for the Handicap League final of the 2015 Shropshire & Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs.

The team from Worfield played a tense semi final second leg away against Market Drayton last weekend having taken a 5 games to 1 lead from the home leg to their rivals. Market Drayton put up a strong fight and also won 5-1 at home so the match was decided on holes won; after all the calculations were done Worfield Golf Club went through to the final having won 5 more holes overall than their opponents.

The 2015 Shropshire & Herefordshire Union of Golf Clubs interclub handicap league is played for the Walker Cup trophy. This year 26 teams from around the two counties entered and were split into 8 initial leagues (like the European Champions League format).

The final of the prestigious event will be played at Burghill Valley Golf Club at the end of September, with either Ludlow GC or Lilleshall Hall Golf Club being Worfields opponents.

Worfield Golf Club won their league against Leominster GC and South Herefordshire Golf Club, and qualified for the quarter finals. There they progressed after beating their local rivals Bridgnorth Golf Club, before sealing a final spot after their victory in the semi final against Market Drayton Golf Club.

Worfield Golf Club Team Captain, Jay Allen, said: “It was a very competitive semi final and some great golf was played by both teams. I am proud of all the players who have represented Worfield this year, they have all played exceptionally well and we have got through some difficult matches. We are very much looking forward to the final.”

Worfield Golf Club Captain, Bob Bonell, said: “I would like to congratulate all the lads for their brilliant achievement of reaching the final. Not only the 12 that played against Market Drayton but all players that have represented the club throughout the season, it has been a real team effort. Well done lads, you have made club history already and I hope you can go on and make some more with a victory in the final – good luck everyone.”

Worfield Golf Club has reached six previous semi finals of the competition over the last 24 years, but have always gone out of the competition in the penultimate round.
