Running in tough, hilly, muddy conditions, the girls’ team battled against some determined opposition in an exciting and closely fought race. They emerged victorious as winners of the Stowe Shield – the first time in the history of the competition that Shrewsbury has won this trophy. Seventeen-year-old Tory Mobley dominated the race throughout and won the individual gold medal, finishing over one minute faster than the second placed runner.
Earlier in the day, 14-year-old Freddie Huxley-Fielding led his team to victory in the Colts race, last won by Shrewsbury in 2011. Freddie, who is from Condover, won the individual title, having led from the front throughout almost the entire 2.5 mile course.
The MANISCCC senior boys’ trophy has been won by Shrewsbury for the last three years in a row. This year’s team was slightly depleted, owing to injury and to the fact that five of the seniors were taking part in the Northern Championships in Manchester on the same day. Nevertheless, they put in a strong performance and finished in second place, with 15-year-old Ben Remnant winning individual silver.
Coach Peter Middleton said: “The course at Sedbergh was an extremely tough one, but our Shropshire runners showed the Cumbrians a thing or two about hill running, and we were delighted with the successes of our girls’ and boys’ teams.”
Shrewsbury School’s running club – known as ‘the Hunt’ – is the oldest cross-country club in the world, with records going back as far as 1831.
