Brits team up for doubles triumph in Aegon GB Pro-Series

They enjoyed a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of second seeds Isak Arvidsson and Micke Kontinen, who will go head to head in the singles final on Saturday afternoon.

The unseeded Brits only decided to pair up for Shrewsbury while in Nottingham last week and had only played together on one previous occasion.

But they complemented each other extremely well against their higher ranked opponents. They were particularly impressive at the net, withstanding a barrage of hard hitting ground strokes from their opponents throughout.

It was Bambridge’s fifth doubles title and Martin’s second.

“We thought our games would complement each other well as a pair,” said Bambridge. “We’re certainly pleased to have won the title here this week. It was great playing in front of a good crowd and, as two Brits, we definitely appreciated the crowd’s support.”

Arvidsson and Kontinen had returned to court for the doubles final having both won through their singles semi-finals earlier in the day.

Finnish player Kontinen, 21, blitzed through his opponent for the second day running, getting the better of French seventh seed Gleb Sakharov 6-3, 6-2.

Swedish No 3 Arvidsson was leading 6-0, 4-2 against Britain’s Josh Milton when his opponent had to retire.

The Scandinavians will now face each other in Saturday’s singles final starting at 2pm at The Shrewsbury Club on Sundorne Road.

A ‘Tennis Express’ session will precede the final at 1.30pm. All spectators are welcome to enjoy the action as the tournament reaches an exciting conclusion.
