Return of Telford Tigers unsung hero Daniel Croft

Croft, 32, has played all but one season of his career in Telford and last year proved to be a key part of the Tigers defence, putting in consistent and assured performances.

“When I spoke to Dan earlier in the summer he wasn’t sure he could commit to the season,” said Watkins. “I was concerned about how I would replace such a loyal, reliable and dependable player. Thankfully he is back on board.

“Dan played very well last year, and had a lot of minutes on the penalty kill. He is very well liked, good in the dressing room, and important to the team.

“To be honest, I don’t think he gets the recognition he deserves for the job he does. Very often he slips under the radar, just getting on with it, and sticking up for his team mates when need be. Although he did get some attention when he lasered that goal in from the blue line against Slough last year!

“Dan brings some experience and maturity to what is still a very young team. It is good for me to have him around. He loves to play in Telford, and is Telford through-and-through. That’s why I will be asking him to wear the ‘A’ this season, and I think he will be a great assistant to Tomas Janak.”

Watkins also paid tribute to one of the team’s sponsors, TRS Personnel, who last week picked up the Business in the Community trophy at the Shropshire Business Awards, in recognition of the company’s support of grass roots sport.

“TRS Personnel are one of our main sponsors and the team really appreciates the support they give to Tigers,” said Watkins.

“We were thrilled for them getting this award. It is great to see them getting recognition from their peers for the work they do to keep Tigers in the ice, as well as supporting St Georges Cricket Club, Shrewsbury Red Lion FC and the Wellington Boxing Academy, and numerous charities.

“I hope their achievement helps to encourage other companies to get involved with local sports clubs as we really need the support of our business community.”

Season tickets are now on sale at the early bird price of £200 (£90 concession, £490 family), until July 1, valid for all home league games, expected to be 27 fixtures. Application forms can be downloaded from the team’s website – www.telfordtigers.co.uk
