Telford gets its own Monopoly game!

Get ready, Telford! The world’s most popular board game, Monopoly, is turning 90, and to celebrate, Telford is getting its very own customised edition!

Ironbridge could be a location on the new Telford Monopoly board

The big announcement took place at Ironbridge this morning when Mr Monopoly himself revealed the exciting news.

Telford beat out nine other UK locations, including Gloucester, Sheffield, and Norwich, for the honor. Winning Moves UK, the official Monopoly maker, chose Telford based on its strong “Sense of Family,” “Civic Pride,” and “Loved Landmarks.”

“Telford ticks every box,” says Ben Ladd Gibbon, Custom Games Executive at Winning Moves UK.

What Will Be on the Board?

The public is now invited to suggest landmarks and organisations to be featured on the Telford Monopoly board. The two-week nomination period starts tomorrow and runs until February 19th. Here are some early predictions:

The Iron Bridge: This “Modern Wonder of the World” is a shoo-in for the coveted Mayfair spot.

Telford Theatre: Could this take the stage on a yellow square, similar to London’s West End in the original game?

Town Park: Telford’s beautiful park is likely to land on a green space.

Thomas Telford Statue: The statue of Thomas Telford, the town’s namesake, is another strong contender.

“We are certain we are going to be wonderfully spoilt with choices,” adds Mr. Ladd Gibbon.

A Telford Twist on Classic Monopoly

The Telford edition will reflect the town’s unique character. Here are some potential changes:

“Telford Future is Orange”: Property sets will be themed around local aspects, from tourism and heritage to arts, business, and sports. And yes, orange might just be the best set to own! (Monopoly champions often favour orange properties because they are statistically the easiest set to acquire.)

“Advance to Telford Station”: Instead of multiple train stations, the travel theme could include Telford’s main train and bus stations, the River Severn, and a cycleway.

“Go Back 3 Spaces”: Watch out! You might be sent back for driving in a bus lane or taking a wrong turn in the town centre.

Chance and Community Chest Cards:

What about the Chance and Community Chest cards? Imagine drawing a card that says, “Chance: You found a £10 note in the Town Park. Collect £10” or “Community Chest: Your car broke down on the M54. Pay £50 for repairs.” The public is encouraged to submit their creative ideas for these cards as well.
