Shrewsbury Town Council has unveiled ambitious plans to enhance their local services in response to the increasing financial challenges faced by Shropshire Council which are likely to lead to greatly reduced or withdrawn services.

While the Town Council has long partnered with Shropshire Council on grounds maintenance, these new proposals aim to expand support and improve services further.
A New Neighbourhood Team
The Council is proposing the creation of a dedicated Neighbourhood Team to address issues like street cleaning, graffiti removal, litter bin management, maintaining footpaths and green spaces, and tackling fly-tipping. This initiative will help fill service gaps and deliver noticeable improvements across the town.
Council leader and leader of the Labour group Councillor Alan Mosley, highlighted the importance of community feedback, stating, “We’re committed to enhancing services, particularly our street scene and public places, and ensuring our town thrives. Following last year’s successful public consultation, we’re now inviting residents to share their views on these proposals before final decisions are made later this month.”
“The proposed enhancements would require a modest increase for the large majority of the town’s Council Tax payers of £15 per year (30p per week).
This additional funding will yield very significant benefits with visible improvements for all communities in key areas. This represents excellent value for money and will help us address the issues that matter most to residents.”
Building on Success
Councillor Rob Wilson, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, echoed the sentiment, emphasising the pride residents have in Shrewsbury and the need for action. “Residents have expressed concerns about areas like litter and overgrown paths. While we’ve stepped in to address specific needs, such as clearing the Roman Road footpath and cycleway, our capacity remains limited,” he said.
Councillor Wilson noted that the Council remains one of the most cost-effective in the country.
The small additional contribution would empower the Town Council to take further action on community concerns and safeguard vital services, whilst remaining one of the most cost-effective town councils in the country.
