Severn Hospice to reduce beds in Telford following funding cut

Severn Hospice is reducing capacity at its Telford hospice after funding cut of £250,000 by Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Group.

The hospice says that the reduction in capacity is the equivalent of removing two beds.

From this month any patient that cannot be accommodated in the remaining seven beds at Telford will be referred to the Princess Royal Hospital.

Severn Hospice community services in Telford and Wrekin – Outreach, day services and Hospice at Home – are unaffected by the change.

The hospice’s leadership team – volunteer trustees and senior managers say they are extremely disappointed that the CCG has cut its hospice funding and in real terms the CCG will not make the savings it is seeking.

The hospice is not part of the NHS but is part of its healthcare network and everyone cared for is an NHS patient.

Last year, Severn Hospice cared for 2,740 people across the region; four out of five in their homes with 217 people cared for in the Telford hospice.
