The village of Shawbury enjoys a close relationship to the unit that bears its name, RAF Shawbury. Yesterday this relationship was enhanced further when the unit and local Parish Councillors unveiled and dedicated a new bench on the village playing fields.

The bench has been funded from donations from the RAF Shawbury Charites Committee following fundraising events held at the unit such as the 10km fun run and the Motorcycle Track Safety weekend.

During the ceremony the Vice Chairman of the Shawbury Parish Council, Mr John Kennedy said: “This bench has been in place for a couple of weeks now and has already been very popular and had a lot of use; not only for people walking around the playing fields but also families watching their children playing football or those using the fitness equipment.”

Personnel from RAF Shawbury were represented by Wing Commander Phil Spencer who is the Officer Commanding Engineering and Logistics Wing; he said: “We are extremely grateful for the tremendous support that we receive from all of the villages surrounding RAF Shawbury, especially Shawbury village which is home to many of our personnel.  We are pleased that we are able to support them with this bench which we hope will be used for many years to come.”
