Telford & Wrekin Council to extend free swimming for under 18s

Telford & Wrekin Council is to expand its free swimming offer to all borough residents under the age of 18 from 1 April 2019 for two years.

The free swimming offer is part of a series of new one off investments which will total £3.6m, made possible following changes to the council’s finances including a one off VAT refund, with a number of these designed to help improve people’s health.

With a residents’ Telford Loyalty Card, the free swimming offer for under 18s will be available across all four Telford and Wrekin Leisure swimming pools at Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre, Oakengates Leisure Centre, Newport Swimming Pool and Abraham Darby Sports and Leisure Centre.

Free swimming sessions for all residents under the age of 18 will include public swimming and male/female only sessions at each pool site.

There is good news for older swimmers too. The council will also extend its £1 swim for all borough residents over 50 for another three years.

£1 sessions accessible for residents aged over 50 include all public swimming sessions, male/female only and adults’ only sessions with a Telford Loyalty Card.

Councillor John Minor, Cabinet Member for Leisure,Green Spaces and Parks, said: “It’s great we can extend our free swimming offer to even more young residents in Telford & Wrekin thanks to our budget approach we can now offer free and subsidised swimming for the majority of people in the borough.”

“We are hopeful this will help encourage more people to be more active and that’s got to be a good thing for people’s health.”
