Police issue swimming warning as hot weather continues

Police are reminding people not to swim in rivers or disused quarries during the current hot weather.

West Mercia Police says officers have been called to a number of incidents in which concerned members of the public have rung to report people swimming in either the River Severn or disused water filled quarries.

The most recent incident was reported in Bridgnorth on Saturday when four men were seen to enter the River Severn following a number of alcoholic drinks.

Police say the most significant danger is that of cold water shock.

The unknown depth of water, the speed of the current and the danger of items beneath the water also cause hazards.

Weil’s disease, E. coli and Cryptosporidium can also be picked up from the water causing diarrhoea and vomiting.

If you have concerns about water safety call 101, use 999 if someone is actually having difficulty in the water.
