The warning follows an incident at the Abbey Wood car park on Haughmond Hill near Shrewsbury at around 1pm on Saturday.
A family had been out walking leaving their blue Land Rover locked. On returning to the car park they heard the sound of breaking glass and spotted a man running off with a beige Zara bag which had been left on the back seat of the vehicle.
He jumped into a silver or grey estate car and drove off along the B5062 towards Shrewsbury.
Police Constable Ben Oakley, the investigating officer, said a window was smashed in the Land Rover to get at the bag. It contained a black Nintendo DSI in a black case, six Nintendo DSI games and an inhaler and Epi-pen.
He said: “The car park was quite full at the time and it is also a busy road. I’m appealing to anyone who might have seen the suspect or his vehicle around the time of the offence, to contact Shrewsbury police station on 101.”
The suspect is described as white, in his thirties or forties, of stocky build with short shaved dark hair.
PC Oakley added that the incident served as a reminder that bags and other belongings should not be left on view in vehicles. “It’s best to take valuable items with you if possible, or to lock them out of sight in the boot.”
