Motorists fined over illegal use of fuel during roadside checks


West Mercia Police officers were joined by staff from HM Revenue and Customs during the checks on the A49 between Ludlow and Craven Arms and also along the Corvedale and in the Clun area.

More than 120 vehicles were stopped during the operations on Thursday and Saturday last week.

Various offences were detected including three vehicles being run on red diesel and a further two on kerosene. All five drivers received £500 fines.

One vehicle was seized and its driver reported for not having insurance, two other drivers were reported for no insurance and another for not having a driving licence.

A West Mercia Police spokesperson said today: “The checks were part of our ongoing programme designed to disrupt criminals and to improve safety for all road users.

“They are carried out at frequent intervals across the area in conjunction with one or more of our partner agencies.”
