The school’s Big Band will be competing in the finals of the National Concert Band Festival this spring.

Maria Eglinton, director of the band commented: “The boys have worked so well and managed to perform to a very high standard at the regional round late last year. We are now working on tightening up the band and hope to do well in the finals.”

John Moore, director of music at the school, said that the band, which has 16 members, gave an outstanding performance in the preliminary rounds.

He commented: “Our musicians earned a gold award in the regional stages but we had to wait until all those rounds were complete before knowing whether or not we had got through. We were delighted to be told recently that our efforts had been rewarded.”

The finals take place on April 13 at the Birmingham Conservatoire and pupils will be returning to Shrewsbury School during their Easter holidays to rehearse their programme, which includes In the Mood and The Girl from Ipanema.

The band will also be taking part in a concert at The Edge in Much Wenlock on March 1 from 7.30pm.
