Cosford railway station re-opening delayed

Contractors working at the station on the Wolverhampton to Shrewsbury line have suffered a number of setbacks whilst trying to pile drive supports into the ground which will hold the new glass reinforced polymer platforms.

Concrete blocks which were not found during trial excavations have delayed the project.

The station is now expected to open mid-April with replacement road transport to Albrighton station continuing to operate.

Work on the redevelopment of the station began in November. The work has involved removing the existing waiting shelters, lighting and fences, demolishing the timber platforms and support structures and the access stairs leading to them.

Once completed the new station will have platforms constructed from glass reinforced polymer which will be laid on concrete cross beams and steel supports. The platforms will have a non-slip surface and include tactile paving to denote the platform edge. New fencing will be erected along the rear of the platforms.

Each platform will have steel and glass waiting shelters and lighting columns, and the customer information screens and station announcement system will be re-reinstated.

There will also be new steel staircases giving access to the platforms.

The previous station was opened on 1937 to coincide with the opening of RAF Cosford.
