The lorry became wedged under the bridge just before 8am this morning leading to traffic backing up from Castle Foregate through Ditherington and onto Heathgates Island.
Traffic also became stationary on Smithfield Road into Frankwell and also on the Ellesmere Road.
Engineers from network Rail were this morning surveying what is said to be minor damage to the bridge.
