Householders warned to secure items following spate of garden thefts

A number of items have been stolen from front and back gardens in the last few weeks. Items include hanging baskets, pedal cycles, fence panels, garden gates and garden ornaments.

Police are investigating the matters and are now urging people to be vigilant and to secure items within their garden.

A Police spokeswoman said: “The latest incident occurred on Monday night when two hanging baskets were stolen from the front of an address in Hayward Avenue.

“A thief helped themselves to the baskets some time between 10pm and 11.20pm.

“One basket has since been recovered but the other one is still outstanding.

“Police are concerned that that the thefts are taking place and are investigating.

“We would urge residents to be aware and to ensure that all of their property is secure.

“People often keep their homes secure, yet often leave items in their garden on view. We would recommend people not to leave expensive items, such as bikes and tools on view, and if things are to be left in a shed please make sure the shed is secure.

“We would also encourage people to mark their property with their postcode.”
