A 4×4 pickup truck was travelling along the road with three people inside when without warning the driver drove into the water filled hole.

The three men inside the vehicle were able to get out of it without assistance. The vehicle ended up at an angle in which the rear wheels were off the ground.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “When crews arrived they were told that there had been problems with the water main throughout the day.

“A man in his 20s had suffered back and leg injuries. He was immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board before being taken to Princes Royal Hospital in Telford for further assistance.

“Another man in his 20’s had a shoulder injury while a man estimated to be in 40s had a cut on his leg. They did not require hospital treatment.

“Crews at the scene said, at one point ambulance vehicles had to be moved back as it was feared that a second hole was starting to develop with water gushing up through the road.

“In many respects it was fortunate that it was a large vehicle that went into the hole – had it been a small car, the whole vehicle might have been submerged and that could have led to a very different situation.”

Some residents and business in the Albrighton area are this morning without water following the burst main.

St Mary’s and Albrighton Primary School are this morning closed because of the situation.

Local residents say the leak was first noticed yesterday afternoon, with a number of people reporting the problem to Severn Trent Water. The road flooded with depths of up to 1ft in places during the height of the burst.

A Severn Trent Spokesperson said, two large water main’s had burst in the area. One yesterday afternoon, and a second this morning which meant that the supply was lost to Albrighton.

Update
Water was restored to all properties in the area early this afternoon.
