Remembrance Sunday 2016: Shropshire services and parades

Remembrance Sunday services will be held across Shropshire this Sunday as church services, wreath-laying ceremonies and parades take place.

Bishop’s Castle

Commemorations begin at the war memorial at 10.45am followed by service at St. John the Baptist Church.

Bridgnorth

Commemorations will take place at the War Memorial in the Castle Grounds from 10.40am. There will then be a further service at St. Leonard’s Church commencing at 11.30am.

Representative bodies will be laying wreaths at the Memorial. Some streets will be closed briefly whilst there is a short parade by the Royal British Legion, Town Council and the Gild of Bridgnorth Freemen. This will culminate at St. Leonard’s church prior to the service there.


Broseley

Remembrance at The Memorial Green from 10.30am.


Hadley

The Parade forms up at Castle Farm Community Centre at 10.25am. before moving off along High Street at 10.30am, passing along Waterloo Road, Sunningdale, Crescent Road, and Manse Road to arrive at Hadley War Memorial shortly before 11am.

The Act of Remembrance is observed at the War Memorial and is followed by a short service at Hadley Methodist Church before the parade re-forms and parades along the High Street to return to Castle Farm Community Centre, where refreshments are served.


Ludlow

Ludlow‘s Remembrance Service at the Church of St Laurence will take place at at 10.45am. It includes a parade along Castle Street, High St, King St, Mill St and Castle St along with a wreath laying ceremony.


Market Drayton

A parade leaves Queen Street Car Park in Market Drayton at at 10.10am, a church service will then take place at St Mary’s Church from 10.45am followed by a parade from the church to the War Memorial at 11.45am which includes a war memorial service at 12 noon.


Newport

The Royal British Legion Parade and Service will be held at St. Nicholas Church, High Street, Newport on Sunday 13 November.

Form up of the parade will be on Audley Avenue by the Cricket Club at 10.10am and march off at 10.15am to arrive at St. Nicholas Church for the Service of Remembrance at 11am.


Oakengates

Telford and Wrekin Council’s annual Remembrance Day event in association with the Royal British Legion and Telford Christians Together takes place at Oakengates Theatre @ The Place on Sunday 13 November at 8pm.

There will be a parade of standards and one hundred names will be read from the Roll of Honour.


Oswestry

A service at 11am will take place at the Memorial Gates followed by the traditional service of Remembrance at St Oswald’s Parish Church.

The Remembrance arrangements are coordinated by the Oswestry Branch of the Royal British Legion and the Town Council.


RAF Museum Cosford

On Sunday 13 November, the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford will hold a Service of Remembrance, paying respect to those service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during their tours of duty.

Visitors who wish to pay their respects and reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave service men and women are invited to join the service, led by Rev (Sqn Ldr) Andrew J L Chapman, Station Chaplain RAF Cosford. Those attending will also be treated to renditions from the Cosford Military Wives Choir, who will perform for visitors on arrival and during the service.

The service will take place in the museum’s Hangar 1 and visitors are politely requested to assemble no later than 10:30am ready for the Service to commence at 10.45am. As well as readings from museum volunteers, there will be hymns and the sounding of ‘The Last Post’, followed by a two minute silence.

During the service, wreaths will be laid by representatives from RAF Cosford, the museum and a Second World War veteran in honour of those who have fallen in the line of duty. Following the service visitors are free to explore the museum at their own leisure.

The museum is open daily from 10am to 4pm and entry to the museum is FREE of charge.


Shifnal

The Royal British Legion Remembrance Day Parade will commence at 10.30am from the War Memorial Club at Five Ways Roundabout, Shifnal and move onwards to a Service of Remembrance at St. Andrew’s Church, Shifnal at 10.55am.

The Parade will leave the War Memorial Club at 10.30am and proceed via Victoria Road, Market Place and Church Street to St Andrew’s Church at 10.55am.

Following the Service at 12pm, the parade will return to the War Memorial Club via Church Street and Innage Road, arriving at 12.15pm.

A temporary closure of the route of the Parade will be required between 10.30am and 12.15pm.


Shrewsbury

A Remembrance Sunday service will take place at St Chad’s Church at 9.45am, those wishing to attend are ask to be seated by 9.20am.

A civic procession will leave the castle at 9am following the route of Castle Gates, Castle Street, Pride Hill, Mardol Head and St John’s Hill to St. Chad’s Church. The Mayor, and other civic dignitaries, will walk along with units of HM Forces and Service organisations to music.

There will also be a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in the Quarry at 11am.

A bugler will sound Last Post, which will be followed by two minutes silence.

A march-past and salute will follow immediately after the wreath laying ceremony on St. Chad’s Terrace.


Wem

A United Service of Remembrance will be held at The Parish Church, Wem on Sunday 13 November 2016 commencing at 10.50am on the grass around the Memorial followed by a service in the Parish Church.

The service will be conducted by Rev. Nick Heron (Wem PCC) and Rev. Neil Adams (Wem Methodist Church)

British Legion Members, Scouts, Guides, Brownies and all other interested organisations are invited to assemble at the main car park at 10.30 a.m ready for march off at 10.45am.

The Parade will be led by The Wem Jubilee Band.


Whitchurch

Town Councilors and representatives of uniformed groups will assemble at the War Memorial to take part in the Act of Remembrance and laying of poppy wreaths.

This will be followed by the march to St Alkmund’s Church for the Service of Remembrance.

10.15am at the War Memorial. 11.00am at St Alkmund’s Church.
