Plans are being made by Shrewsbury Railway Heritage Trust to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of Abbey Station situated in Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury.
David Morris, Director of the Trust said: “Shrewsbury’s Abbey station opened on 13 August 1866 as the temporary end of the Potteries, Shrewsbury & North Wales Railway, known locally as ‘The Potts’) and the Trust’s celebratory event will be held on 10th September from 10am to 3pm.
The Open Day will feature model railway displays, with some models which have been built replicating original locomotives on the S & M line. Displays of recently acquired historic photographs, some not seen before will feature the Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Railway.
The Trust has created a children’s colouring sheet featuring a previous famous steam engine – Gazelle, with a Competition for children. The direct descendant of Robert Stephenson has been invited to attend the day.
The event should prove most informative, and is an important milestone in the history of this building. Board Members, and members of the Trust are working together to complete plans to fully complete the installation of various items to make the building even better equipped for community use, although it is available for community, business and social organisations use now.”
