Shropshire firefighters armed with hoses, buckets and sponges are taking part in the national Fire Fighters Charity car wash at fire stations across the county every Saturday for the next four weeks.
They are raising hundreds of pounds for the charity which gives respite, recuperation and rehabilitation to sick or injured firefighters and their families.
A total of nine county fire stations are offering the car cleaning service in exchange for a charity donation.
“The car wash is the charity’s largest national fundraising event of the year when firefighters throughout the UK willingly wash the nation’s cars in exchange for a donation,” said organiser Ashley Brown, Fire Fighter Charity Service Co-ordinator.
Firefighters will also give out important fire safety advice to visitors during the car wash.
Last year more than £278,000 was raised through car wash events by UK firefighters.
“This fantastic total went directly towards helping fire and rescue community members in need of support,” added Ashley.
The first car washes are this Saturday (March 12) from 9am at fire stations at Whitchurch and Bridgnorth. Shrewsbury fire station is holding its event on Saturday, March 19 from 10am to 3pm while firefighters at Prees will wash cars from 9am to 2pm.
Minsterley fire station’s event is on March 26 from 9am to 2pm and Wellington is holding its car wash event at the Red Lion pub on the A5 from 9am to 1pm on Saturday, April 2.
Fire stations at Newport, Church Stretton and Clun are also holding car washes at dates yet to be announced.
Shropshire firefighters regularly raise more than £2,000 each year.
The Fire Fighters Charity needs more than £8 million to run national centres around the country. The charity, set up in 1943 to help wounded firefighters and support their families during Word War 2, is entirely self funding and relies on the goodwill and generosity of donations from members of the public.
The services which the charity offer are open to all serving operational fire fighters, Fire Control, support staff as well as those who are retired.
