Students from Newport Girls’ High School are the West Midlands regional winners of the Step into the NHS national schools’ competition.

The good news was revealed by Health Education West Midlands and NHS Careers.

Now in its seventh year, the competition attracted numerous entries from up and down the country and more than 1,700 students got involved. The competition aims to promote the 350 plus careers available in the NHS in England and students were tasked with designing an advertisement and job description for their chosen role.

Isabel Nungent, Abigail Wilding-Lucas, Megan Harvey and Chenxi Liu, from Newport Girls’ High School, impressed the judges with their entry to promote the role of an art therapist to their peers. The girls created a video which allowed users to better understand what and art therapist does. They also produced a website which included a well written job description.

Ros Garner, Head teacher, said: “I am most impressed with both the creativity and the technology the girls have used for their entry in the competition. The video promoting art therapy certainly made me realise more about the breadth of career opportunities available in the NHS. All of the students that took part enjoyed the challenge and will be better informed as a result.”

Isabel, Abigail, Megan and Chenxi added: “We chose art therapy because we are all enthusiastic about art and we wanted to choose a career that is associated with it!”

Heather Pitchford, workforce development specialist for Health Education West Midlands, said: “I’d like to congratulate Isabel Nungent, Abigail Wilding-Lucas, Megan Harvey, Chenxi Liu and the Newport Girls’ High School for their fantastic entry. Young people are extremely important to the future of the NHS workforce across the region. It is important that the NHS engages with young people now and lets them know about the wealth of career opportunities.

“Within the NHS there are 350 different careers to choose from and jobs, ranging from community matron, dietician or public health analyst to a finance manager or web developer. Initiatives such as the schools competition really help to raise awareness of this.”
