Over the forthcoming year the RHS will visit the School for full day visits to train staff on activities and lead the children in gardening and horticultural lessons in a variety of chosen topics. The RHS will offer support, advice and practical steps to enable a gardening culture within the School.

Everyone at the School is excited to get underway. There is already a very popular gardening club and the 14 acre School site includes its own woodland so the children are already used to exploring and learning outside.

Some of the projects the School will be developing over the coming year include erecting a Habitat Village to encourage mini-beasts to live in the grounds and to enable the pupils to observe and monitor their behaviours; sowing a wildflower meadow; developing a sensory garden; extending the vegetable garden and the “plot to plate” ethos and planting an Orchard of Heritage fruit trees.

Suzanne Wakeley, Head of Pre-Prep at the School and Chair of the RHS Gardening Committee is looking forward to undertaking these new outdoor initiatives, “We are delighted to have been chosen to be the RHS partner school and are looking forward to making the most of their invaluable knowledge, expertise and support.

“What could be more rewarding for the children than to watch the development of their plants from seed to beautiful flower or tasty vegetable in an environment which they have designed and developed themselves? Not only will this initiative help to bring the curriculum to life it will also foster resilience, increase self-esteem and embed a sense of responsibility.

“It also provides opportunities for older pupils to work with younger pupils, something which reflects our whole school philosophy and community approach. We are also very lucky to have Stan Sedman, winner of the RHS Champion Community Award for his involvement in Britain in Bloom and other local community projects. We are raring to go, with our garden tools and green-fingers!”
