The book launch, at Shrewsbury Museum on Wednesday 29 October from 11 till 3, is part of the BIG DRAW event. All children are welcome to come and take part.
Charley Darwin’s Shrewsbury, published by Much Wenlock’s Ellingham Press at £4.99, is based on a treasure hunt around the county town. Children follow Emma and her little dog Lexi as they explore Shrewsbury with Charley. And yes, Charles Darwin’s family did call him Charley when he was little!
Jackfield-based artist Hazel said, “It has always fascinated me that such a famous person as Charles Darwin should have grown up in Shrewsbury. I wanted children to know more about his early life here. My sister Shelagh, who has written several children’s stories, was the obvious person to look to. Because we wanted to keep it in Shropshire, Ellingham Press, who published the successful Peggy the Pig books about the history of the Iron Bridge and the Olympian Games, and also the Wrekin Giant story, were the ones we wanted to work with.”
“We are delighted to launch the book at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery as part of the national BIG DRAW event,” says Ina Taylor from Ellingham Press. “This year’s theme, Celebrating the Environment, is just perfect for a Darwin-themed event in Shrewsbury. Artist Hazel will be working with children to create their own artwork inspired by objects in the museum collection and buildings in the town.”
