Pippa regularly takes part in ‘Gardener’s Question Time’ where her bubbly personality and wide expertise make her a valuable member of this popular radio programme.
Pippa is a plant pathologist – the scientific study of plant diseases. She trained as a botanist at Durham University and achieved an MSc in Crop Rotation at Reading University. She has also been awarded an honorary Doctorate by the University of Durham. In 1985 Pippa joined the staff of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Gardens at Wisley, where for many years she ran the Plant Pathology Department with great success.
Pippa began working for the BBC in 1988, joining Alan Titchmarsh for the gardening slot on BBC 1’s ‘Daytime Live’ and was a regular presenter on BBC 2’s ‘Gardeners’ World’. She has presented her own series, ‘Growing Science’ on Radio 4. Her expert horticultural knowledge is extensive which, amongst other things, led to being gardening consultant for the ITV murder mystery series ‘Rosemary and Thyme’.
Regular writing commitments keep Pippa very busy. She writes for BBC ‘Gardener’s’ World’, ‘Amateur Gardening Magazine’ and is Gardening Correspondent for the Mirror newspaper. She has written many successful books, which include ‘Tips, Garden Pests and Diseases’, ‘Garden Problem Solver’, ‘Pippa’s Organic Kitchen Garden’, ‘A Garden for All Seasons’ and ‘1001 Ways to be a Better Gardener’. Her latest publication is ‘The Gardener’s Calendar’ which was published in 2012.
