The official launch of the Alex Wilson Foundation kicked off in September last year when an Old Salopian XI played a football match against an Alex Wilson XI at the school. Money raised from the match went to the Alex Wilson Foundation, set up to offer a scholarship at Shrewsbury School to a keen sportsman who would not otherwise be able to afford the fees to attend the school.

Two strong sides, the Alex Wilson XI and an Old Salopian XI, provided a very entertaining game on a blustery autumn morning. In spite of the conditions, a large crowd turned out to support the two teams. It proved to be a very competitive game with close chances at either end with the Old Salopian XI eventually managing to secure a 3-1 victory and gain some revenge for the previous 2011 defeat.

Captained by Alex’s older brother Henry said:

“We are aiming to make this game an annual fixture. So far the Alex Wilson Appeal has raised £60,000.”

“Alex was a keen sportsman and in his final year at Shrewsbury was captain of football, vice-captain of rugby and a member of the first XI cricket team. These opportunities he was able to take advantage of were considerable and so the aim of the charity is to really give another local boy who otherwise would not have been able to afford the education a chance to really take advantage of what Shrewsbury School has to offer.”
