Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Designated on 27th November 1986, the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site was the birth place of the Industrial Revolution around 300 years ago. Heavy industry has long disappeared from the valley and the old ironworks are silent but the stunning River Severn valley is still impressing visitors and local residents with its iconic Iron Bridge and ten museums, which reflect life in the Gorge over the centuries.

An exhibition to mark the 25th anniversary will take place from 1st July to 30th September in the Footprint Gallery at Jackfield Tile Museum, with displays featuring historic and contemporary images and community memories of the Gorge. It will also be celebrated at the Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Festival on 24th September.

The museum is asking local residents to dig out interesting photographs of the Ironbridge Gorge that could possibly feature in the exhibition. The curators are particularly keen to find an image of a car crossing the Iron Bridge, while it has one of an elephant crossing the bridge, it does not have one of a car.
