After a year of planning and a month of decorating, the team at Powis Castle and Garden are excited to open a ‘Treasured Christmas’ in the castle from 3 December. As a special treat this year, visitors will be able to see the castle lit up inside and outside until the later time of 7pm from Saturday 3 to Sunday 18 December.

Sarah Johnson, Visitor Operations and Experience Manager, said: “We started thinking about this Christmas display before Christmas last year was over, that’s how much thought and planning goes into our displays. This year’s is particularly special though as it takes direct inspiration from the collection that we’re so proud to care for.

“We’re keeping the castle, café and shop open until 7pm for a fortnight so everyone has a chance to see the decorations. The castle at night is truly spectacular and we hope these extended opening hours will encourage those who have been working or at school all day to do something different and get into the festive spirit.”

Festive lights will guide the way from the car park to the castle, where Christmas trees as tall as 16ft, decorated with thousands of lights and hundreds of baubles, will transform the medieval fortress into a magical experience for the whole family.

Each decorated room will transport visitors to a different part of the world or era gone by. From Italy and China to Tudor times and Greek mythology, the impressive decorations include a giant gold dragon, venetian masks, and feather boas.

Younger visitors can also enjoy a nature-inspired trial in the garden throughout December at this National Trust Cymru property. Follow Hawys the hedgehog and help her find a place to hibernate this Christmas. Dogs on leads are welcome in the garden throughout the winter months.

The café will be open selling an array of festive hot food and delicious treats throughout December, as well as the popular afternoon teas which must be booked in advance with the café. The shop will also be open, well stocked with gift ideas for everyone in the family, National Trust souvenirs and items from local businesses.

National Trust members go free. Normal admission charges apply, no additional event charges. Garden open every day 10am to 4pm. Castle open 3–18 December, 12pm to 7pm (last entry 6.30pm) and 19–24 December, 12pm to 4pm (last entry 3.30pm). Whole site closed 25-26 December.
