It was standing room only when budding rock stars from Shrewsbury’s newest contemporary music school took to the stage at the weekend.

Twenty-five members of The Rock Project Shrewsbury, which meets weekly in the St Barnabas Centre performed an end-of-year gig to a packed audience at Shrewsbury College.

The bands, featuring musicians aged just seven through to 18-years-old took to the stage on July 2.

Lisa Wordley who runs the school said: “The concert was excellent and we have to thank all of the students and tutors who put so much hard work into getting ready for the gig.

“There were a lot of positive comments from the audience, but they standing ovation capped off an excellent concert.”

They were also treated to drum pieces, vocal solos, blues jam sessions and the senior students also presented a tribute piece to Motorhead.

Lisa added: “It’s fantastic to see the students develop not only as musicians but in confidence too. We’re going to produce a DVD of the concert so that the bands can see just how far they’ve come.”

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the Student of the Year Award for Junior and Senior Sessions to a pair of talented brothers.

Guitarist Ethan Cockaday won the award for the senior sessions while younger brother Dylan who plays the bass guitar won the junior session title.

Their mother, Sam Goddard, said: “Just to see my two boys up on stage was amazing let alone both receiving the student of the year awards.

“If it hadn’t been for the dedication and enthusiasm of the tutors at The Rock Project my boys would have never had this opportunity.”

The Rock Project Shrewsbury offers young people tuition in drums, bass, guitar and vocals, while being tutored by working musicians.
