Review: The Wizard of Oz

The Wizzard of Oz

Get Your Wigle On’s latest offering, The Wizard of Oz, opened at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn last night and it does not disappoint; the show is a fantastic, professional interpretation of a much loved classic.

Molly Jennings, Ahmed Hamad, and Ross Wigley were wonderful as Dorothy, Scarecrow, and Tin Man, as they succeeded in bringing to life characters we all know and love, whilst also making the roles their own. James Archer’s Lion was hilarious and drew plenty of well-deserved laughs throughout, with his spot-on delivery and mannerisms, and thoroughly amusing renditions of If I Only Had the Nerve and King of the Forest.

Taking on the role of the musical’s antagonist, Rhian Ellis impressed as the Wicked Witch and perfectly captured the evil, cackling essence of the character. James Broxton also amused the crowd in his role of the Guard, and Abbie Jagger was delightfully sweet as Glinda the Good Witch.

With a cast boasting talents of all ages, these principal parts were complemented by younger members playing munchkins and poppies.

In addition to superb acting and singing from all involved, the show gave the cast the chance to show off their dancing skills, with the captivating Jitterbug number being a particular highlight. The humorous, pop-culture references occasionally scattered throughout the show were also a nice touch, and went down well with the audience.

This production is colourful, hugely enjoyable, and ideal entertainment for the whole family; it will be running until Sunday evening, so booking tickets for one of the remaining performances is highly recommended.

Performances are taking pace at Theatre Severn between Thursday 5th November and Sunday 8th November 2015. For times and ticket prices see https://www.theatresevern.co.uk
