Shrewsbury Sentinel Works 100th anniversary will be celebrated at this weekend’s Shrewsbury Steam Rally at Onslow Park.

Sentinel waggon manufacturing was moved in 1915 to a new factory in Shrewsbury alongside the LNWR mainline to Crewe from the old works in Glasgow. The company produced many steam and diesel-powered engines with production continuing until the late 1950’s.

Edward Goddard, Society Chairman said: “As a born and bred Salopian I am extremely passionate about Sentinel engines, so the Society is planning a special Sentinel Spectacular, where the return of these magnificent steam waggons will be a great delight for people attending the Rally.”

As well as Sentinel and a host of other steam powered vehicles the show will have over 1,000 exhibits, including steam-powered tractors, cars and other vehicles of all shapes and sizes.

The Main Arena is the centrepiece of the event over the two days, with the Grand Parade of Steam Engines, set to nostalgic music and poetry, being the highlight, and parades of all kinds of other vehicles, from historic lorries and classic cars, to heavy horses and even a birds of prey display.

Outside the arena the exhibits will be on display if you want a closer look, as well as a range of oil and steam-powered static engines and military vehicles.

A working field brings the past back to life with a range of demonstrations showing the history of farming as it has changed through the last century.

The Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway’s smallest steam locomotive will also be a big star of the weekend. Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 tank locomotive ‘Dougal’ will be on show throughout Sunday and Monday. The loco will be the centrepiece of a W&LLR stand, promoting the railway’s Steam Gala which is being held on 5-6 September.

This year’s event is taking place at Onslow Park, Shrewsbury on Sunday 30 August and Monday 31 August 2015. Tickets cost: Adult: £12, Pensioner: £11, Child: £1. Under 5’s – Free.
