Local woodworking firm, A R Manley and Son Ltd, has been shortlisted for a prestigious award by the British Woodworking Federation (BWF).

The company is recognised for its exceptional work in replicating an authentic Victorian greenhouse using traditional techniques.
The BWF Awards celebrate the finest craftsmanship and achievements within the UK’s woodworking and joinery sector. A R Manley is in the running for the BWF Heritage Project of the Year Award, a category sponsored by Remmers (UK) Ltd.
“We are incredibly honoured to be shortlisted for this award,” says a spokesperson for A R Manley. “Preserving the historical narrative of a building is a core value for our company. Our team of skilled craftsmen takes immense pride in restoring, renovating, and repairing heritage joinery.”
A R Manley’s rich history in heritage work made them a perfect fit for the greenhouse project. Their brief was to meticulously replicate the original structure, ensuring every joint and section matched perfectly. The team’s extensive knowledge of listed buildings and meticulous attention to detail were crucial for success.
The original greenhouse boasted a timber frame with a glass roof, featuring mechanical roof vent openers, window stays, and braces. A R Manley meticulously recreated these elements, using sustainable Accoya wood and polished brass ironmongery. The old light-opening mechanisms were refurbished and repainted, and the entire structure received a factory finish with on-site touch-ups. Solid Accoya wall panelling and window boards were also produced and installed to complete the project.
The dedication and expertise poured into this project have earned A R Manley a well-deserved spot on the BWF shortlist. The winner will be announced at the BWF Annual Awards Ceremony on Friday, November 22nd, at The Langham Hotel in London.
