Glyn helps brothers clock up century of service

Four brothers have made working life a real family affair by chalking up a remarkable century of service at a Shropshire business.

Glyn Grant has worked at the same road sweeper depot in Telford, now operated by Go Plant Fleet Services, for exactly 30 years.

But the 46-year-old is merely following in the footsteps of older brother – and colleague – Peter, who reached the same milestone two years ago.

The fact that younger siblings Lee and Craig also worked at the same depot, for 25 and 15 years respectively, means the brothers have brought up what is perhaps a unique century of service between them.

Glyn was presented with vouchers and a specially-made plinth-mounted model of a road sweeper by Paul Langham, Operations Director at Go Plant Fleet Services, last week.

Paul said: “To reach a 30-year milestone is a very special achievement and I’d like to offer Glyn my personal thanks, and those of the company, for his great service.

“He’s been working at this depot since he was 16 and he’s been a model employee – an example for us all to follow.

“The fact that the four brothers have worked here for than 100 years between them is absolutely staggering – a feat that must be extremely rare if not entirely unique.”

In recent years, Glyn has taken charge of the nationwide company’s main recycling facility at Telford – an industry-leading initiative for the road sweeper sector.

The Siltbuster machines turn nearly 500 tonnes of waste swept from roads into sand and stone for the quarrying and construction industry every week.

Paul added: “The installation of the equipment, and its ongoing operation, represent a significant investment for the company and is a vital part of our proactive approach to sustainability.

“So we needed someone knowledgeable, experienced and reliable to be responsible for it on a day-to-day basis and Glyn has taken that challenge in his stride.

“It’s to his immense credit that he’s so quickly become a true expert in operating the complicated machinery, but that’s actually no surprise to anyone at the company as he’s such a dedicated and valued member of the team.”

Glyn, who lives in nearby Lightmoor Village, first set foot in the depot when he arrived for work experience in June, 1989.

Initially a fitter’s mate, he moved on to operating road sweepers and gully tankers after passing his HGV test and took charge of the Siltbuster recycling operation when it was installed three years ago.

He said: “I’ve been here a long time and I’ve seen a lot of change, but I enjoy my job so I’ve never really thought about moving on.

“Four brothers working at the same depot for a total of 100 years must be something of a record – and it’s great to be a part of it.

“I’m now in charge of the company’s recycling operation which is obviously really good for the environment, so it’s a big responsibility.

“I’m only 46 so I’ve still got another 20 years ahead of me – there could be another presentation then!”
