A team of intrepid cyclists from Telford-based workplace solutions supplier Lyreco has raised nearly £1,000 for charity – without leaving their Head Office canteen.
Jen Andrews, from the company’s marketing team, led a group which cycled more than 600 miles to raise the funds to support Lyreco’s educational charity work in Madagascar.
The team used spin cycles donated by Lawley-based Anytime Fitness and set up in Lyreco’s Head Office canteen in Donnington Wood to virtually cycle between their three national distribution centres – a total of 519.5 miles.
But they smashed their target and ended up cycling 628 miles throughout the day on a journey which took them from Telford to Airdrie in Scotland and Dublin in Ireland.
Jen said the money would help the Lyreco for Education project rebuild, renovate and equip schools in Madagascar, as well as training teachers and helping prevent damage from cyclones.
“We did a charity cycle to our French head office in Marly last year which covered some 370 miles and was really successful. This year we decided to go a little harder and cycle the distance between our three National Distribution Centres.
“It was hard work but thoroughly enjoyable and we cannot thank Anytime Fitness enough for their support, as well as everyone who sponsored us. We’re delighted to have raised so much money for such a good cause.”
The team were closing in on their £1,000 target, which they hoped to smash once all the donations had been collected, she added.
Anytime Fitness also carried out health MoT checks on Lyreco staff as part of the event.
Since it was launched in 2008, Lyreco for Education has helped build 161 schools in five countries and raised more than 1.7 million Euros to support educational work.
