Independents Day was held earlier this month to raise the profile of shops and restaurants, with a ‘passport’ being produced as a guide to the town.

Now businesses such as Acoustic Boutique, television and audio specialists on Shrewsbury’s High Street, and art gallery The Soden Collection, on Wyle Cop, are working together to continue the initiative.

A television from the renowned German manufacturer Loewe has been installed by Acoustic Boutique in the gallery to showcase some of the artists featured its latest exhibition of modern British and American pop art.

Jonathan Soden of the gallery said: “The film on the television is proving a hit with visitors to our pop art exhibition as it is giving an insight into to the lives of some of the artists on show, such as Lucian Freud, David Hockney, Francis Bacon and Tracey Emin.”

Tina Boyle of Acoustic Boutique, explained that links between businesses were proving successful.

“As independent retailers we are keen to collaborate and promote each other to customers so that they are aware of the broad range of products and services available in this lovely town.

“We are looking to partner with other businesses and institutions and have worked with several local restaurants on their sound systems and are exploring a design and technology project with Shrewsbury School,” she said.

Jonathan added that he would encourage all independents to work in partnership.

“Shrewsbury is blessed with an amazing array of shops and restaurants and it is great that we are sharing ideas and initiatives. Our artwork has been displayed at Shrewsbury menswear retailer Pockets and is now on the walls at local restaurant Drapers Hall.

“In addition, I have worked with Shrewsbury High School on an art project with the pupils and I am looking at developing a range of other links in the county,” he said.

The pop art exhibition at The Soden Collection runs until August 6.
