A Shropshire carer is celebrating winning two awards – one of which comes after she sang gospel songs to a very ill client in a bid to keep her calm after suffering a seizure.

Vanessa Lewis, 26, has been recognised for her outstanding work for Sentinel Care Services, based at Stafford Park in Telford. She picked up the Star Carer of the Quarter award and the Good Feedback Badge.

Sentinel Care Services managing director Steve Harris said: “Vanessa has been working with us for just over a year. She has come on leaps and bounds during her time with us and has grown in confidence tremendously.

“She is a member of staff that we know we can rely on and she is an integral part of her team. She is always willing to help out and support new members of the team, new and old alike.

“The feedback we have had from customers has been overwhelming and her popularity among them is well deserved. They view her as a person they can trust and rely on, as do we.

“Vanessa has had a few tough visits in her time with us and her calm and caring nature in difficult circumstances has helped not just the customers, but family members through these times.

“We are very proud and blessed to have her as a Sentinel care worker. She is very much appreciated by all who work with her and we know she will continue to shine.”

Miss Lewis’ efforts highlight the high standard of care and compassion the company strives for in its service to clients.

The Good Feedback Badge was awarded after three lots of positive comments in relation to her work as a carer in the Wombourne area where she has just been promoted to as team leader.

Mr Harris said: “Vanessa received a thank-you from a customer’s granddaughter after her gran’s death to say how grateful she was that Vanessa dealt with this with respect and in an extremely professional way. Vanessa did not leave the customer until help had arrived.

“She received a nomination from a fellow carer after caring for a very poorly lady. The lady was very ill during the visit and had a seizure.

“Vanessa dealt with this calmly and called 999. She also sang gospel songs to her in an attempt to keep her calm as she knew she loved gospel.

“After this lady passed away, Vanessa received good feedback from the family to say how grateful they were to her.

“The lady’s daughter said Vanessa’s singing to her mother was beautiful and that they will never forget her kindness, especially as her mother was a religious person.

“It was an absolute honour to present the awards to Vanessa in recognition of the hard work and professionalism she has shown since her relatively short time with us. Her efforts have brought positive comments from both staff and families of clients and we wish her continued success with the company.”
