Staff from a Shropshire building company have been presented with a trophy as champion charity fund raisers.

The cup has been handed over to Galliers Homes of Shrewsbury from Macmillan Cancer Research, who organise the annual coracle world championship race in Shrewsbury.

Employees from the Galliers and sister firm Cameron Homes competed in this autumn’s race on the River Severn and donated more money than any other of the 35 teams.

The event, which raised a total of £25,255 for the charity, involved crews of four paddling in coracles across the River Severn and back, watched by spectators.

“We really enjoyed the event and although we were not crowned as world champions and managed to fall in the water on several occasions it was great to be presented with the trophy as the best fund raisers,” said Andy Gough, sales and marketing director of Galliers and Cameron Homes.

“It was an ideal opportunity for us to have some fun and collect money for such a good cause and we hope to take part next year.”

Janey Davies, who helps to organise the coracle race for Macmillan, said that it was a fantastic effort by the company.

“The coracle race was a really enjoyable day, with some fierce competition between the teams on the river, and we were delighted with the support we received,” she said.

Next year’s coracle race is to be held on September 16 2016 and teams can pre enter at coracleworldchampionships@gmail.com
