One of the ‘unluckiest’ days of the year turned out to be the reason for a double celebration for a Shrewsbury woman.
Nicola Wheelhouse started a new business venture in the town on Friday, March 13, which also happened to be her 31st birthday.
Nicola opened a vintage, retro and craft boutique called Nicola Roo in The Parade Shopping Centre in St Mary’s Place, fulfilling a long-held ambition.
“I have always dreamed of having my own business so I am delighted to be launching this venture in The Parade and hope it will be a big success,” said Nicola, who formerly managed a charity shop in Shrewsbury.
The new retail outlet will specialise in selling vintage and retro clothing and accessories, handmade cards and Nicola’s own paintings.
“My dad is a former shopkeeper and now a keen artist in north Wales and his passion for art and business rubbed off on me I guess. I believe in recycling items to reduce waste and am opening my boutique to encourage people to buy vintage and to re-use materials.”
Nicola said that she chose Friday 13th to open the shop as the number had always been lucky in her family as both her father and brother had their birthdays on the 13th of a month.
“This year we all have our birthdays on a Friday 13th – many people would think it unlucky but it has always been to a special number to us,” she added.
Beverley Bakes, the Mayor of Shrewsbury, officially opened the shop and even became the first customer, buying a vintage handbag.
“I wish Nicola the best of luck – I am a big fan of vintage and retro clothing and in fact my outfit today is from a charity shop,” she commented.
