Shropshire Constructing Excellence’s (SCE) Quarterly Business Breakfast took place on 12th February at the Lord Hill Hotel, Shrewsbury and focused on Skills and Youth Unemployment, with speakers from Telford & Wrekin Council, the National Apprenticeship Service and SLR Consultants. The event kicked off at 7:45am with guests able to network and tuck into to breakfast and refreshments, followed by a welcome from SCE’s Chair, Ray Philpin.

Jaclyn Kitson, SCE Network Coordinator, explained: “Our Quarterly Business Breakfast was fantastic and we’re already looking forward to the next one. The topics covered by our speakers were really interesting and well-received by the audience, and afterwards they had the chance to network with a diverse range of professionals from across the region. Katherine Kynaston of Telford & Wrekin Council took to the stage for the first of our four presentations during the morning and discussed skills research conducted by the council.”

Other speakers at the event included Robert Stuart from the University of Wolverhampton who enlightened and entertained guests with a presentation about some of the issues faced by air-tightness and insulation, and Dr George Nash of SLR Consultants, who talked about archaeology as a profession and the importance it places on building new homes, to encourage people to do their research to make sure there are no buried buildings on site.

“Guests also had the chance to learn from Julie Mulrayn from the National Apprenticeship Service about the opportunities and support available to companies looking to take on apprentices, including help throughout the recruitment process which is increasingly being taken up by firms across Shropshire. With an exciting calendar of upcoming events scheduled, we’d urge anyone interested in finding out more information to get in touch by emailing sce@telford.gov.uk, or calling 01952 567578,” Jaclyn concluded.

Shropshire Constructing Excellence is a business network focused on supporting the construction sector by sharing best practice, promoting modern methods of construction and providing a range of events on various industry issues and hot topics.
