Man seriously injured following collision in Sheriffhales

The incident happened at the junction of the A41 with the B5314 for Weston-Under-Lizard and Sheriffhales at about 6.20pm yesterday.

A yellow Suzuki Ignis car was in collision with a gold Peugeot 307 and a white Vauxhall Vivaro van.

The driver of the Suzuki was trapped following the crash and had to be freed by the fire service. He was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital with head, chest and abdominal injuries and his condition is believed to be serious but stable today.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “On arrival crews found a van and two cars which had been involved in a collision. One car was sandwiched between the other car and van resulting in significant damage to both sides of the vehicle and meant that the driver was trapped.

“The driver, a man believed to be in his 20s, was unconscious and had sustained suspected head, chest and pelvic injuries in the crash. Crews gave the man oxygen and stabilised his condition before working with the fire service to extricate him from the vehicle by removing the side of the car.

“The man was immobilised with a neck collar and spinal board before being conveyed by land ambulance on blue lights to Princess Royal Hospital for further assessment and treatment.

“The occupants of the second car and van were walking wounded and did not require hospital treatment.”

Police Constable Richard Bramwell, who is investigating the circumstances of the collision, appeared to anyone who saw what happened or any of the vehicles involved being driven immediately beforehand to contact police.

“The Suzuki is believed to have come from the direction of Weston-Under-Lizard on the B5314 and was travelling towards Sheriffhales, with the van coming from the opposite direction. The Peugeot was travelling along the A41 itself towards Newport,” he said.

“Two of the drivers were not injured but the driver of the Suzuki, a man in his 20s, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. His condition is not believed to be life-threatening at this time but he remains in a serious condition.

“The road and junction were closed until about 10.30pm while the emergency services and police collision investigators worked and the vehicles recovered.

“Anyone who saw the crash itself or any of the vehicles just beforehand and has not yet spoken to police, please contact me on 0300 333 3000.”
