Gurmeet Singh Ubhi, from Berberis Road, Leegomery, Telford was found guilty of murdering his 24-year-old daughter Amrit Kaur Ubhi on September 7 last year.
He was ordered to serve a minimum of 15 years following the jury’s decision at Leicester Crown Court today.
24-year-old Amrit was murdered in the conservatory of the family home after her father was woken up after working a night shift. Gurmeet Singh Ubhi, 54, strangled his daughter.
During the trial it was revealed that Mr Ubhi, had a problematic relationship with Amrit.
Speaking outside Leicester Crown Court, Acting Detective Inspector Billy Scott, who is based in CID at Malinsgate Police Station, expressed his satisfaction having today seen Gurmeet Singh Ubhi found guilty of the murder of his daughter Amrit Kaur Ubhi.
Speaking about the verdict, A/DCI Scott said:
“We are very pleased with today’s verdict as at no point during his time in police custody did Mr Ubhi show any remorse for what he had done.
“On the day in question he ended his daughter’s life with his own hands and then calmly tidied the scene before contacting the police. His actions have caused heartbreak to his family and I hope that today’s guilty verdict does at least offer them some small consolation.
“I would like to pay tribute to the entire Ubhi family at this time – including Amrit’s boyfriend Stuart Loakes – because they have conducted themselves with dignity and restraint through what has been a very difficult time. Several family members were called to give evidence during the trial and this must have been particularly distressing.
“Amrit was a much loved daughter, sister and girlfriend and her family and friends remain devastated by her loss.â€
