A slice of history unearthed in Wellington came under scrutiny this week when a special visit was held to show off significant archaeological discoveries made as part of work on the town’s new £8 million Civic Quarter.

Telford & Wrekin Council Leader Andrew Eade paid a visit to Edgbaston House yesterday to see for himself the evidence of tanning and horn-working in the area which were revealed as part of an archaeological survey.

Cllr Eade also invited Allan Frost from the Wellington History Group to join him to have a look at the findings and the pair were met by Professor George Nash from SLR Consulting Ltd who made the discovery.

The historical findings were made as part of preparation works for the Telford & Wrekin Council Borough Towns Initiative scheme. These are needed to make way for the new library and civic centre, and included demolishing modern extensions to the back of Edgbaston House.

As part of the archaeological investigations, experts unearthed ditch and sandstone wall boundaries to the backs of Edgbaston House and Number 11 Walker Street, as well as a timber-lined well or cesspit.

The ditch was found to be filled with large quantities of horn-cores, a by-product for tanning and horn working.

Cllr Andrew Eade said: “It was a fascinating visit which opened my eyes to the medieval and historic development of Wellington. I was particularly interested in the old building next to Edgbaston House which I believe is the oldest house in Wellington.

Allan Frost, of the Wellington History Group, added: “Some people grumbled about Telford & Wrekin Council’s plans to create a new Civic Quarter in Wellington in a much-needed quest to revive the town’s business economy.

“I am more than grateful for this. Without it, exciting discoveries behind Edgbaston House in Walker Street may never have come to light, nor would some aspects of the development of Medieval Wellington have been revealed.”

work starts on major investment in randlay - 28/02/10
Work has started to infill an underpass as part of a major investment in redeveloping another important key centre in Telford.

The council will be moving onto site this week to commence the infilling of the underpass and construction of a new pedestrian crossing as part of a Borough Towns Initiative scheme to redevelop Randlay Centre.

The work will be the preliminary stage of a wider project which will include the demolition and reconstruction of the existing local centre and the building of a new community centre, retail units and a 72 bed care home.

In addition, planning permission has also been approved for 15 two-bedroom apartments and three one bedroom apartments.

The scheme also includes various highway works including sealing off the underpass from Randlay Centre to Whitworth Avenue, under Randlay Avenue.

The underpass, had been identified as an area of concern for public safety, will be replaced with a new puffin crossing and a wider footpath along Randlay Avenue.

theatre severn celebrates first birthday - 28/02/10
Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn celebrated it’s first birthday this week, after a hugely successful first year which has seen thousands of local people enjoying a huge variety of performances.

The first season went on sale two months before the Theatre opened, and by the beginning of 2009 the first 20 shows were completely sold out with extra dates being arranged where possible. Now in it’s third season, the Theatre continues to sell out or reach near capacity on many shows.

To date the theatre has staged 269 performances, using both performance spaces and has welcomed many hundreds of performers, some of whom are involved in local theatre companies, while others are part of national or international tours.

New Box Office records are being set as a result of the amazing demand for tickets with Theatre Severn’s first pantomime ‘Peter Pan’ selling out 31 of the 47 shows by the end of its first performance week and a capacity figure hovering around the 97% mark.

Theatre Severn’s dance studio is also proving to be very popular as a venue for local dance schools and the Restaurant and Chapel Bar are both becoming popular with theatre goers and general visitors alike.

Peter Nicholson, Theatre Manager said, “The reaction and support for Theatre Severn in its first year has been astonishing and beyond expectation."

" Our hope is to continue the diverse programming policy whilst maintaining the highest quality. It really has become a venue that both Shrewsbury and Shropshire can be proud of.”

longden, ford and rea valley – young people to have their say - 28/02/10
Young people from the Longden, Ford and Rea Valley area are being invited to have their say on issues affecting them and their communities at the next meeting of the Longden Ford and Rea Valley Local Joint Committee (LJC) which will take place on Wednesday 10 March from 7.00pm at Mary Webb School in Pontesbury.

The meeting will feature a series of workshops led by young people in the area, who will quiz local councillors on a range of issues including transport, leisure activities, employment and facilities for young people.

Councillor Tudor Bebb, Chairman of the LJC said: "Since the LJC was established last year we have helped fund a number of youth projects within the area. Young people will play a major role in shaping the future of their communities, and we want them to be involved in our meetings and help us to understand what issues are important to them.

“This meeting will be a great way for them to help make where they live a better place to be. It is also an opportunity for them to meet local councillors and members of the committee and find out what we are doing for young people in the area and tell us what we could do better.”

Staff from Shropshire Youth have been supporting young people in the area to help them plan the workshops at the LJC, and they are keen to encourage as many young people from the area to attend the meeting and put forward their ideas to the committee.

Further details on how to get involved in the meeting are available from the Community Working Officer Mathew Mead on 01743 252534 or from Helena Williams, the Area Youth Worker on 01743 791777.

theives target telford business - 28/02/10
Police officers in Telford are appealing for information following a burglary in Wrockwardine Wood. The incident occurred at a car cleaning business on Plough Road sometime between 5.30pm on Monday 22nd February and 8.45am on Tuesday 23rd February.

Sometime overnight it appears that thieves broke into the premises by breaking off two padlocks and the forcing open the door. It seems the thieves carried out a thorough search of the premises but then left the scene without actually stealing anything.

A police spokesman said: “The fact that nothing was stolen in this incident suggests that perhaps the thieves were disturbed by someone or something and were forced to flee the scene. However, although nothing was taken, more than £300 of damage was done to the premises as a result of this break-in.

“Anyone who has information about this incident, or who may have seen anything suspicious on Plough Road on Monday night, is asked to contact the police on 0300 333 3000.

“Alternatively, please remember that Crimestoppers can also be called anonymously on 0800 555 111 if you have information you’d like to pass on without identifying yourself.”

donation helps academy band - 28/02/10
A donation from the West Mercia Police Authority Community Safety Fund – successfully applied for by Community Support Officer (CSO) Linda Davis - is set to be put to good use by the Show Band that is based at the Abraham Darby Academy in Madeley.

The Abraham Darby Show Band – which comprises of 62 young people who attend the school - has been given a once in a lifetime opportunity and been invited to play at the Carnegie Hall and in Central Park in New York. The band provides its members, a large proportion of who are from the Woodside district of Telford, with a sense of purpose and direction outside of school hours and is helping to steer the youngsters involved away from the type of anti-social behaviour young people can so easily become involved in.

To enable the young people to accept this invitation, the Academy set out with the goal of raising £50,000 to fund the trip as this is the rough cost of transporting everyone involved with the band, and all the musical equipment, to New York for the 5-day trip at the end of March.

On hearing of the fundraising efforts of the band’s young people – which had seen them already raise almost £40,000 - CSO Davis, who is a member of the Woodside, Local Policing Team, decided to apply to the Community Safety Fund to see whether local Police Authority members would agree to donate some money to help the band reach their goal of £50,000.
