A 30-year-old man was threatened and robbed whilst walking
in Oakengates on Thursday evening.
Around 10pm as the victim walked
along a footpath towards the mini roundabout by Oakengates
Theatre, he was approached by two unknown men. Without
warning, the men grabbed the victim and pushed him off
the footpath into a more secluded spot.
The men then threatened the victim
and demanded that he hand over his belongings.
A police spokesman said: “The
victim had only his old Nokia mobile phone on him and
handed this over to the two men. When he then stated
he had nothing else to give them the two men made off
and ran from the scene towards the centre of Oakengates.
“The victim has been able
to give us descriptions of the two men that robbed him.
The first man is described as being white, around 6ft
tall, aged in his late teens or early 20s and as having
stubble on his face. He is also described as wearing
a white baseball cap and a dark blue or black zipped
jacket.
“The second man is described
as being white, around 5ft 8inches tall, of stocky build
and as wearing a grey hooded top with the hood up, white
tracksuit bottoms and white trainers.”

- Police are to carry out anniversary checks
one week on from a serious road collision on the outskirts
of Shifnal today.
The driver of the car, a man in his 20s, remains in
hospital in critical but stable condition following
the crash, which happened in Haughton Road just after
4pm on last Saturday. Officers have also renewed an
appeal for witnesses to the incident.
A red Volkswagen Golf was in collision with the roadside
verge and a tree stump, suffering extensive damage and
seriously injuring two of the occupants. A third man
suffered minor injuries.
Constable Nick Allbutt, of Shifnal Police Station, said
officers would be in the Haughton Road today, exactly
one week on from the collision, to try and identify
any other potential witnesses who might be able to help
police establish the circumstances.
He said: “We have already spoken to a number of
people but believe there would have been others who
might have seen the crash itself or the red Golf, a
grey Audi or an orange Ford Fiesta in the area immediately
beforehand.
“All the vehicles had been travelling towards
Shifnal from the Welcome Break Services island and the
M54.
“The driver of the Golf suffered serious head
injuries and was air lifted to Selly Oak Hospital in
Birmingham, where he remains in a critical but stable
condition.
“Anyone who might have seen any of these vehicles
or who might have any other information which could
help us establish exactly what happened is urged to
contact police on 0300 333 3000.”
One passenger in the Golf, a man in his late teens,
suffered serious leg, arm and back injuries and was
also air-lifted but to the University Hospital of North
Staffordshire. A third man was treated at the Princess
Royal Hospital for minor injuries.
The road was closed until about 10pm that night while
the emergency services worked and debris cleared from
the carriageway.

Business in Shrewsbury
town centre say the road works on the junction of Smithfield
Road and Bridge Street are causing colossal economic losses.
John Hall, Chair of Shop
in the Loop says: “For the whole town the loss
of trade must be hundreds of thousands of pounds, millions
by the time the works will be complete.”
“The Darwin Centre alone
is recording footfall down 9,000 a day, at a cost of
about £30,000.”
Suggestions for a solution to
the problem includes; Enterprise, the contractor, working
additional shifts to get the work completed or opening
the Kingsland Bridge to motorists for free at a cost
of £500 which could be picked up by Shropshire
Council.
Yesterday, Shropshire Council
announced that the ‘right turn’ from Bridge
Street onto Smithfield Road in Shrewsbury is now open
until 9.30am on Monday morning so that weekend trade
is not disrupted.
The turn was closed last week
so that improved central islands could be built in the
junction to make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians
to cross the road.

Jane celebrating with friend
following Michael Winner awarding the two star trophy. |
Shropshire
was last night the location for ITV1's Michael Winner's
Dining Stars featuring Jane Bennett from Shrewsbury.
Michael arrived in Shrewsbury by chauffeur driven
car having landed in his private helicopter at RAF
Shawbury. Once in the town centre he quizzed locals
as to the pronunciation of the town, was it Shrewsbury
or Shrowsbury?
During the show Michael
said he was impressed by Jane’s attention
to detail and presentation of poached quail’s
eggs and roast lamb with sweet potato, and enjoyed
eating with her five female friends.
But he was disappointed when she did not dance round
the pole in her dining room wearing a thong –
something she unwisely confesses to having done
in the past.
Did Jane get a Michael Winner Dining Star? Yes not
one, but two stars the highest in the series so
far. Well done Jane!
Jane will now compete with another contestant from
the series in creating a meal for Michael's celebrity
friends at a special dinner party.
Well done Jane! |

The found ring |
Police in Telford are appealing for help from the
public as they attempt to identify the owner of
a ring they discovered when four male youths were
arrested on suspicion of theft and assault in Telford
town centre on Wednesday 10th March. When
they were arrested in connection with several
unrelated matters, a number of items of jewellery
were found on the youths and police are keen to
trace the owner or owners of this jewellery as
they suspect that it does not belong to the youths.
Of the jewellery –
which was all gold – the most identifiable
item is a gold ring with the ‘Marines’
logo on it and police have today released a photo
of this ring in the hope that someone identifies
it as their own.
|
A police spokesman said:
“The ring appears to be quite distinctive and as
well as having the Marines logo on it, it is also engraved
with initials and a date on the inside. “The
date engraved on the inside reads ‘1953-1977’
and we would be very keen to hear from anyone who has
knowledge of these dates and can then give details of
the initials that are engraved alongside them.
“We believe it’s likely
that this ring means a lot to its owner and therefore
we are keen to not only establish how the youths came
to have it in their possession, but also to reunite
it with the person it actually belongs too.
“Anyone who recognises the
ring, believes they own it, or who feels they know who
does actually own it, is asked to call police in Telford
on 0300 333 3000.
“Alternatively, please remember
that Crimestoppers can be called anonymously if you
have information about this property that you’d
like to share anonymously.”
Three of the four youths arrested
on Wednesday have since been charged with various theft
and assault offences while the other youth has been
released on police bail.

“We are really looking forward to wishing him
a very special happy birthday on April 7 and it will
give us a chance to say a big thank you to him for all

us about it.”

There will be an internet safety session for parents
and grandparents at Albrighton Red House on Monday 15th
March. This is to give parents and guardians a brief
overview of internet safety for children, as well as
practical tips and advice. The session will last about
an hour and will include a presentation, where to get
further support and an opportunity to ask questions.
The sessions have been organised jointly by Shropshire
Council and Shropshire Youth Association. Flavia Humphreys,
Shropshire Broadplaces Co-ordinator said, “Technology
develops so quickly, that as a parent or carer it is
really easy to feel left behind. The internet can be
brilliant, but it can also make children vulnerable.
We would particularly encourage those who do not know
anything about computers to come along.”
The Albrighton workshop will start at 2pm and finish
at 3pm. There will be sessions running in 8 other locations
around Shropshire during March and April. Some will
be evening sessions to fit around parents who work during
the day.
If you think you might be interested in attending the
session at Albrighton or another one elsewhere in the
county, please contact Flavia Humphreys 01743 210311.
