- Investigations are
underway in Market Drayton after a man holding a knife
entered a property and demanded money from the occupants.
Police believes the offender may have followed the two
victims back from Cheshire Street, where they had collected
a takeaway, as he entered their home just after they
got back on Monday Evening. The incident happened between
about 11.10pm and 11.20pm in Towers Lawn.
Shortly after they got home, a man wearing dark clothing
walked inside the address and demanded money. He then
began to search the flat before being challenged by
the male victim and an altercation between the two took
place.
The male occupant suffered minor injuries to his hand
and arm and both he and the woman were left shaken by
the incident. A purse was stolen from the address but
is not believed to have contained anything of value.
The offender made off in the direction of Cheshire Street
and, despite a police search, was not found. The victim
suffered minor injuries to his hand and arm and both
he and the woman were left shaken by the incident.
Constable Dave Bettison said the incident was being
treated as a robbery and appealed for anyone who might
have seen the offender or anyone acting suspiciously
in the area at the time to contact police.
The man is described as white, possibly in his late
teens and wearing a black or dark hooded top and a baseball
cap.
Anyone who might have seen the offender or anyone acting
suspiciously in the Cheshire Street or town centre area
in the run up to this incident, or who might have seen
him fleeing the scene afterwards is asked to contact
police on 0300 333 3000.
CCTV from the town centre and surrounding areas is being
examined and house to house enquiries carried out.
Constable Bettison added: “Fortunately, serious
crimes such as this remain rare in Market Drayton and
Shropshire as a whole, but it was very frightening for
the victims and it is therefore vital that anybody who
might have information that could help our enquiry contacts
us.”............................................................................................................................................................................................................

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia is launching
a new mobile speed enforcement route in Shropshire on
Monday 15 March as part of its new community concern
pilot scheme which aims to address concerns from local
residents about speeding and road safety issues.
New mobile enforcement sites will be launched along
the B4176, known locally as the ‘Rabbit Run’,
following significant levels of concern from the local
communities about the speed of traffic using the road.
Speed data collected along the B4176 Rabbit Run route
shows that one in three drivers using the road exceeds
the 60 mph speed limit with 15% driving above 66 mph.
Rod Reynolds, Head of the Safer Roads Partnership in
West Mercia, comments: “This is the second community
concern site to be launched in the Shropshire Council
area following the introduction of an enforcement site
in Pant in November last year.
The speed data collected highlights that there is a
speeding problem along the whole of the route and too
many drivers are breaking the 60 mph limit. By taking
a route approach, it is hoped that the commencement
of speed enforcement will significantly reduce speeds
and make the road safer for everyone.”

- Farmers and developers
are being reassured about a policy that will require
developers of barn conversions to contribute towards
the cost of affordable housing in the county.
The policy is contained within
Shropshire Council’s new Core Strategy planning
document, which will guide developments in the county
until 2026.
Under the current version of the
new Strategy, contributions obtained from barn conversions
would be 35% of the construction cost of equivalent
affordable housing floorspace. This is 15% above the
contributions gained from open market housing in settlements,
and subject to a ceiling of 50%.
The money would go towards the
provision of affordable housing.
The policy is an evolution of,
and an improvement on, similar policies previously enforced
by Shropshire’s former district councils. This
‘sliding scale’ policy - the bigger the
conversion the more the developer pays - was recently
used by South Shropshire District Council.
An initial proposal that developers
of barn conversions should contribute 50% was changed
following consultation with farmers, developers and
other interested parties.
Councillor Martin Taylor-Smith,
Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for strategic
planning and transport, said: “I am keen to reassure
the county’s farmers and developers that this
policy provides a positive approach to development in
the countryside, whilst still helping to meet the housing
needs of residents.”
“It is not a new or
‘punitive’ tax on the county’s farmers,
as has been claimed. Nor will we be charging developers
50%, as some people think. In fact, it is an evolution
of, and a vast improvement on, the existing polices
previously enforced by the former district councils.

- Telford & Wrekin
Council is urging all traders in Wellington to attend
a meeting to discuss the regeneration works that will
be taking place this year.
Market stalls and local shops
have received flyers advertising the meeting that will
take place on Tuesday 16 March, 6pm at All Saints Parish
Church hall.
At the meeting, local traders
will be able to ask council officers questions about
the regeneration works and raise any issues or concerns
that they may have.
Works to improve streets and repaving
in Wellington town centre is due to start this June
on Market Square, New Street and the area outside Rasputins.
This is part of the council’s multi million Borough
Towns Initiative programme to regenerate key local centres
across Telford and Wrekin.
Councillor Andrew Eade, Leader
of the Council, said: “This significant investment
will replace Wellington’s ageing pavements and
roads that at the moment are uneven and regularly flood
in places,
“This is a major part of
the regeneration programme in Wellington and has been
a long standing issue amongst traders and shoppers.
“I would encourage as many
local traders to attend the meeting to find out what
works will be happening near to their business.
“Telford & Wrekin
Council will do everything it can to limit disruption
to local traders while repairs are carried out and I
hope that they are in agreement that improvements are
needed.”

There will be an internet safety session for parents
and grandparents at Albrighton Red House on Monday 15th
March. This is to give parents and guardians a brief
overview of internet safety for children, as well as
practical tips and advice. The session will last about
an hour and will include a presentation, where to get
further support and an opportunity to ask questions.
The sessions have been organised jointly by Shropshire
Council and Shropshire Youth Association. Flavia Humphreys,
Shropshire Broadplaces Co-ordinator said, “Technology
develops so quickly, that as a parent or carer it is
really easy to feel left behind. The internet can be
brilliant, but it can also make children vulnerable.
We would particularly encourage those who do not know
anything about computers to come along.”
The Albrighton workshop will start at 2pm and finish
at 3pm. There will be sessions running in 8 other locations
around Shropshire during March and April. Some will
be evening sessions to fit around parents who work during
the day.
If you think you might be interested in attending the
session at Albrighton or another one elsewhere in the
county, please contact Flavia Humphreys 01743 210311.
More information about internet safety can be found
