renewed appeal for witnesses over missing shrewsbury teenager - 10/03/10

Detectives leading the search for a Shrewsbury teenager who has not been seen or heard from in over a month today renewed an appeal for information.

Officers continue to actively investigate the disappearance of Hayden Reynolds-Evans, 18, who was last seen when he left The Albion Vaults pub in the town centre just after 10pm on Monday, 1st February.

A specialist team was brought in yesterday to carry out a search of the River Severn using sonar equipment, the results of which are currently being analysed.

Detective Inspector Ernie Locke, who is leading the search for Mr Reynolds-Evans, said they were still keen to speak to anyone who might have been in that area on the night the teenager went missing.

He said: “We have yet to trace a cyclist who was seen on CCTV riding past The Gateway Arts and Education Centre a few seconds after a man we believe to be Hayden walked passed in the opposite direction.

“I would like to once more appeal to that cyclist to get in touch with police on 0300 333 3000 as a matter of urgency.

“We also believe that there was a group of young males in the Coton Hill area that evening that may have been there at the time Hayden was last seen. They may also have information that could assist our investigation and I would urge them to contact us.

“Although it was a few weeks ago, if people could please think back to that night and whether they were in the Coton Hill area between about 9.30pm and 11.30pm. No matter how insignificant it might seem, someone may just have that small piece of the puzzle that could help us find Hayden.

“Hayden’s family is desperately worried about him and we are doing everything we can to try and find him.”

DI Locke also made a direct appeal to Mr Reynolds-Evans himself. “I am asking Hayden, if he sees or hears this appeal, to please contact police immediately on 0300 333 3000 or to go to his nearest police station to let us know that he is safe and well.”

Mr Reynolds-Evans went missing after returning by train from a trip to Liverpool with friends.

He left Shrewsbury Railway Station and went into The Albion Vaults opposite a little after 10pm that night, saying he would see his friends at The Bird in Hand pub in Coton Hill. However, despite leaving by the rear door of the pub a few moments later and heading along Cheshire Street in the direction of Coton Hill, he never arrived and was reported missing to police when he failed to make contact with his family and friends.

He continues to be treated as a high risk missing person, as it is completely out of character for him to disappear in such a way. The investigation is being overseen by Detective Chief Inspector Neil Jamieson, head of CID in Shropshire Division.

Anyone with information which might help in the search for Hayden is asked to contact police on 0300 333 3000 as a matter of urgency.

smokers prepare to quit on no smoking day - 10/03/10
Shropshire smokers are ready to stub it out for good this No Smoking Day.

This year’s campaign theme, Break free, we can help, acknowledges that No Smoking Day is the time for smokers to break free from their smoking habit and escape their chains of addiction. The theme is a message of support and empowerment that has come from smokers’ themselves.

Duncan Bannatyne OBE, No Smoking Day President commented, “Quitting smoking isn’t always easy. Most of the nine million UK smokers say they’d like to quit, and many have tried to stop several times over the last year. If you’ve tried and failed a few times, don’t give up hope. You’ll find few ex-smokers that quit the habit on their first attempt.”

Dan Tickle, No Smoking Day Chief Executive said, “Research has shown that over two thirds of them would like to stop. No Smoking Day provides an excellent opportunity for them to do that. By using the support available on No Smoking Day and throughout the year you can significantly increase your chance of success.”

Dan adds “Good luck to all the Shropshire smokers who are breaking free on March 10 – remember you’re not alone. Take advantage of the support available; you’ll get friendly and expert advice to help you to stop smoking for good.”

attempted street robbery in telford - 10/03/10
Police officers in Telford are appealing for information following an attempted robbery in Wellington. The incident occurred close to Whitchurch Drive on Monday 8th March.

Between 2.45pm and 3.30pm, as an 18-year-old man walked along a footpath that runs parallel with Whitchurch Drive towards Leegomery, he was approached from behind by an unknown man who tapped him on the shoulder.

The victim turned to face the man and the man then raised his hands and demanded the victim handed over all his belongings.

A police spokesman said: “Understandably the victim felt threatened by the man and he reacted by grabbing his arms and pushing him away. This caused the man to fall off balance and this allowed the victim to turn and run back up the footpath and out on to Whitchurch Drive.

“The victim did not see the unknown man again and he then made his way home before calling police to report this incident.

“The victim has described the man that threatened him as being white, aged in his early 20s, around 5ft 10inches tall and as being of medium build. He is also described as having shaved, dark coloured hair, a thin face and as wearing a green khaki cap, a waist length camouflage jacket and light grey jogging bottoms.

“Officers are currently looking at possible links between this incident and a number of robberies that occurred in this area earlier this year, although the fact that this incident involved only one offender does make it a little bit different.

“Anyone who believes they may have information about this incident, or who may recognise the offender from the description we have provided, is asked to contact the police on 0300 333 3000.”

- 10/03/10
A Telford and Wrekin resident has won Volunteer of the Year at the West Mercia Criminal Justice Board’s annual award ceremony.

Dawn Yapp-Altinsoy has been a Referral Order Panel Volunteer for the last six years. She has won the award after gaining a reputation for a cheery disposition and willingness to help but at the same time speak her own mind regarding youth crime and custody matters.

“She is seen as a senior member of the Referral Order process willingly tutoring new members, and helping in the development of those that struggle.”

Dawn, 41, works full time and is also a volunteer visitor for Victim Support. She has been a Referral Order Panellist since 2004. She has also recently become the “young persons champion” on the Sevenside Housing Trust resident’s panel. She has also become a member of “Clinch”, the community involvement in care and health.

internet safety for parents and grandparents - 10/03/10
There will be an internet safety session for parents and grandparents at Albrighton Red House on Monday 15th March. This is to give parents and guardians a brief overview of internet safety for children, as well as practical tips and advice. The session will last about an hour and will include a presentation, where to get further support and an opportunity to ask questions.

The sessions have been organised jointly by Shropshire Council and Shropshire Youth Association. Flavia Humphreys, Shropshire Broadplaces Co-ordinator said, “Technology develops so quickly, that as a parent or carer it is really easy to feel left behind. The internet can be brilliant, but it can also make children vulnerable. We would particularly encourage those who do not know anything about computers to come along.”

The Albrighton workshop will start at 2pm and finish at 3pm. There will be sessions running in 8 other locations around Shropshire during March and April. Some will be evening sessions to fit around parents who work during the day.

If you think you might be interested in attending the session at Albrighton or another one elsewhere in the county, please contact Flavia
Humphreys 01743 210311. More information about internet safety can be found at thinkuknow.co.uk

telford police officer amazed by donations
- 10/03/10
PC Angela Leech, who is based at Malinsgate Police Station, has spoken of her amazement after two generous members of the public came forward to offer money and belongings to a 44-year-old man who was the victim of a burglary in Brookside back in February.

The victim was burgled on Saturday 6th February and the thieves responsible completely ransacked his flat and stole almost all his possessions – most of which he had saved up for some time. Touched by his plight PC Leech had successfully applied for a donation from the Police Community (PC) Fund who donated £250 to the man to help him get back on his feet.

Two men were arrested in connection the burglary and they have since been released on police bail. Police recovered some of the stolen property although it is unlikely the victim will be getting this back because much of it was damaged.
