Shropshire smokers are ready to stub it out for good
this No Smoking Day.
This year’s campaign theme, Break free, we can
help, acknowledges that No Smoking Day is the time for
smokers to break free from their smoking habit and escape
their chains of addiction. The theme is a message of
support and empowerment that has come from smokers’
themselves.
Duncan Bannatyne OBE, No Smoking Day President commented,
“Quitting smoking isn’t always easy. Most
of the nine million UK smokers say they’d like
to quit, and many have tried to stop several times over
the last year. If you’ve tried and failed a few
times, don’t give up hope. You’ll find few
ex-smokers that quit the habit on their first attempt.”
Dan Tickle, No Smoking Day Chief Executive said, “Research
has shown that over two thirds of them would like to
stop. No Smoking Day provides an excellent opportunity
for them to do that. By using the support available
on No Smoking Day and throughout the year you can significantly
increase your chance of success.”
Dan adds “Good luck to all the Shropshire smokers
who are breaking free on March 10 – remember you’re
not alone. Take advantage of the support available;
you’ll get friendly and expert advice to help
you to stop smoking for good.”

Police officers in Telford
are appealing for information following an attempted
robbery in Wellington. The incident occurred close to
Whitchurch Drive on Monday 8th March.
Between 2.45pm and 3.30pm, as
an 18-year-old man walked along a footpath that runs
parallel with Whitchurch Drive towards Leegomery, he
was approached from behind by an unknown man who tapped
him on the shoulder.
The victim turned to face the
man and the man then raised his hands and demanded the
victim handed over all his belongings.
A police spokesman said: “Understandably
the victim felt threatened by the man and he reacted
by grabbing his arms and pushing him away. This caused
the man to fall off balance and this allowed the victim
to turn and run back up the footpath and out on to Whitchurch
Drive.
“The victim did not see
the unknown man again and he then made his way home
before calling police to report this incident.
“The victim has described
the man that threatened him as being white, aged in
his early 20s, around 5ft 10inches tall and as being
of medium build. He is also described as having shaved,
dark coloured hair, a thin face and as wearing a green
khaki cap, a waist length camouflage jacket and light
grey jogging bottoms.
“Officers are currently
looking at possible links between this incident and
a number of robberies that occurred in this area earlier
this year, although the fact that this incident involved
only one offender does make it a little bit different.
“Anyone who believes
they may have information about this incident, or who
may recognise the offender from the description we have
provided, is asked to contact the police on 0300 333
3000.”

A Telford and Wrekin resident has won Volunteer of the
Year at the West Mercia Criminal Justice Board’s
annual award ceremony.
Dawn
Yapp-Altinsoy has been a Referral Order Panel Volunteer
for the last six years. She has won the award after
gaining a reputation for a cheery disposition and willingness
to help but at the same time speak her own mind regarding
youth crime and custody matters.
This approach has made a difference to lives of offenders
and victims and ensured that where necessary their voices
are heard.
Angela Parton, head of the Shropshire Telford and Wrekin
Youth Offending Service, said: “Dawn is a steady
and consistent panel member who is always keen to learn
more, regularly attending and volunteering herself for
training courses in her thirst for knowledge in order
to benefit both the young offender and their victims.
“She is seen as a senior member of the Referral
Order process willingly tutoring new members, and helping
in the development of those that struggle.”
Dawn, 41, works full time and is also a volunteer visitor
for Victim Support. She has been a Referral Order Panellist
since 2004. She has also recently become the “young
persons champion” on the Sevenside Housing Trust
resident’s panel. She has also become a member
of “Clinch”, the community involvement in
care and health.
Dawn said: “It is an honour to receive this award.
I thoroughly enjoy working with the young people and
other volunteers, this award represents the commitment
and dedication of all referral order panel volunteers.”

There will be an internet safety session for
parents and grandparents at Albrighton Red House on
Monday 15th March. This is to give parents and guardians
a brief overview of internet safety for children, as
well as practical tips and advice. The session will
last about an hour and will include a presentation,
where to get further support and an opportunity to ask
questions.
The sessions have been organised jointly by Shropshire
Council and Shropshire Youth Association. Flavia Humphreys,
Shropshire Broadplaces Co-ordinator said, “Technology
develops so quickly, that as a parent or carer it is
really easy to feel left behind. The internet can be
brilliant, but it can also make children vulnerable.
We would particularly encourage those who do not know
anything about computers to come along.”
The Albrighton workshop will start at 2pm and finish
at 3pm. There will be sessions running in 8 other locations
around Shropshire during March and April. Some will
be evening sessions to fit around parents who work during
the day.
If you think you might be interested in attending the
session at Albrighton or another one elsewhere in the
county, please contact Flavia
Humphreys 01743 210311. More information about internet
safety can be found at thinkuknow.co.uk

PC Angela Leech, who is based at Malinsgate Police Station,
has spoken of her amazement after two generous members
of the public came forward to offer money and belongings
to a 44-year-old man who was the victim of a burglary
in Brookside back in February.
The victim was burgled on Saturday 6th February and
the thieves responsible completely ransacked his flat
and stole almost all his possessions – most of
which he had saved up for some time. Touched by his
plight PC Leech had successfully applied for a donation
from the Police Community (PC) Fund who donated £250
to the man to help him get back on his feet.
Two men were arrested in connection the burglary and
they have since been released on police bail. Police
recovered some of the stolen property although it is
unlikely the victim will be getting this back because
much of it was damaged.

Police in Newport are appealing information following
the theft of a trailer and two motorcycles from Stafford
Street on Monday.
Between 5pm and 5.15pm, the victim parked his vehicle
– a blue VW Golf estate – in the car park
on Stafford Street while he nipped into the shops. The
vehicle was towing a trailer containing two motorcycles
when it was parked up and when the victim returned to
his car - just 10 minutes or so after he had parked
up - he discovered that the trailer and the two bikes
had been stolen.
The two stolen bikes are both second hand and are described
as a Honda CR250 and a Honda CR125. The victim in this
incident had only just bought the bikes and he is therefore
very upset by this theft.

People are being invited
to get on their bikes and help promote the new cycling
facilities being unveiled at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital
next week.
The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital
NHS Trust is working with Cycle Shrewsbury to make it
easier and more convenient for people to cycle to the
hospital.
On Tuesday, 16 March 2010, Trust
Chairman Dr John Davies will officially open 100 new
cycle parking spaces which have put in at twelve different
locations on the site.
The ceremony will be attended
by Councillor Keith Barrow, Leader of Shropshire Council,
who is planning to cycle up to the hospital from Shirehall,
and starts at 1pm.
Adrian Osborne, Head of Communications
and Business Development at the Trust, said: “Being
physically active is one of the best ways to keep healthy,
and cycling is an easy way to get exercise as part of
your daily routine. We already have a number of staff
who cycle and hope that with these new initiatives many
more staff, as well as visitors to the site, will be
encouraged to join in.”
On Tuesday people will be able
to have their bike checked for free by Dr Bike, the
Cycle Shrewsbury mechanic. Dr Bike will be outside of
the ward block from 12pm until 4pm. Local police will
also be attending to security mark bicycles.
