A woman loading shopping
into her car in on the Wrekin Retail Park in Telford
has been the victim of a distraction theft.
At around midday on Sunday, as the lady was loading
her shopping into her car she was approached by an unknown
woman. The woman asked the lady for directions and stated
that she was travelling from Liverpool to Corby.
The lady describes the unknown woman as being white,
approximately 5ft 7inches tall and as speaking with
a foreign accent. She is also described as having short
blonde hair and as wearing a light beige jacket.
The unknown woman opened a map and leant on a another
vehicle while the victim gave her directions and while
the victim was distracted another person opened her
car door and stole bank cards from in her handbag.
Having given the unknown woman directions the victim
returned to her car and made her home. It was not until
yesterday she discovered her bank cards were missing
and, on then contacting her bank, it appears that her
cards have been used at least three times following
their theft and that several hundred pounds have been
taken from her account.
Similar incidents have also been reported to police
in Dawley and Newport over the past few months, as well
as the Wrekin Wretail Park in January.
Police are reminding people to be on their guard against
this type of crime whenever they are out and about and
ensure that personal belongings are kept safe and within
sight. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................

Salopian Brewery in
Shrewsbury has taken two of the top Awards in
the National Beer Competition held by the Society
of Independent Brewers (SIBA). The winners were
announced last week in Stratford-on-Avon.
The brewery’s Darwin’s
Origin a light copper coloured fruity ale brewed
to celebrate the bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s
birth was judged Champion Beer in the Best Bitter
Category.
It was one of just nine
beers to win a national title, from the 1,400
that entered the initial stages of the competition.
To succeed, Darwin’s
Origin had to come through one of seven regional
heats, followed by a final judging in Nottingham
last month for the short-listed 63 beers.
What’s more the bottle
version of Darwin’s Origin was runner up
in the National Bottled Beer Competition.
Darwin’s Origin is
an eclectic mix of hops from across the world
but this blend produces a beer that offers something
to everyone. Crisp, tart, fruity and refreshing
but also with a juicy malt background. |
The brainchild of Salopian
Brewery's officer manager Debbie Turner, the beer
was brewed to celebrate Shrewsbury’s most
famous son Charles Darwin. |

A 25-year-old woman
was left with minor puncture wounds to her right leg
following an altercation in Ketley at the weekend.
The disturbance took place between 5.30pm and
6.30pm an address on Fifth Avenue and involved a number
of people, many of whom appeared to know each other.
Police believe the altercation was sparked by an argument
that took place earlier in the day in the Hare and Hounds
public house.
As a result of the argument a number of people attended
the address on Fifth Avenue and it was then that the
argument turned into physical altercation.
It remains unclear exactly how the 25-year-old woman
suffered her injuries but it appears that she was stabbed
by an implement of some sort during the disorder and
her injuries, although fairly minor, did requirement
medical attention.
Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed
this disorder, or who may have any knowledge of why
the original argument started.
Anyone who believes they may have information about
this incident is asked to contact police in Telford
on 0300 333 3000.

Severn Trent will unveiled
a £3 million scheme to replace the aging water
main and sewer network in Oswestry today.
Paul Winterton, programme manager
for Severn Trent Water, commented: “The existing
cast iron water pipes are beginning to show signs of
wear and tear and are more prone to leaks and bursts,
so we are going to replace them with modern, tough plastic
pipes which will dramatically reduce the risk of future
leaks. In addition, we need to replace parts of the
sewer network in Oswestry so it makes sense to do it
at the same time in an attempt to cause minimum disruption
to the town. “
The plans went on display in the
Walford Davies Suite at The Guildhall yesterday and
are available to see from 9am-1pm today.
In preparation for the water mains
work, the company will be in the town over the next
few weeks digging trial holes to determine the material
and diameter of the existing water mains, and their
proximity to other utilities assets such as gas and
electricity.
From this information the company
will be able to establish the safest, most cost effective,
and least disruptive way of completing the work.
Paul adds: “We understand
that any kind of roadworks are going to be disruptive
to a small town like Oswestry, that’s why we want
to meet local residents to talk about how we can work
together to cause the least disruption possible. We
can also talk to local businesses about our loss of
profits scheme.”
Representatives from the water
strategy team at Severn Trent will also be available
to talk about the work the company has been doing to
improve the taste of the water since a series of drop-in
sessions were held at the end of last year.

Around 2,500 civil servants in Shropshire continue with
their 48-hour strike over redundancy pay today.
In Shropshire courts, job and tax centres are all being
affected by the Public and Commercial Services Union
(PCS) walkout.
The action comes as PCS members could lose a third
of their entitlement over cuts under the civil service
compensation scheme.
Strikers are today outside RAF Cosford, Copthorne Barracks
in Shrewsbury and various other locations in the county.
The changes to the civil service compensation scheme
were agreed with five of the six civil service unions
after 18 months of negotiation and consultation.

Local GP and prospective
parliamentary candidate Dr Charles West will be encouraging
smokers in Shrewsbury to break free and kick the habit
for No Smoking Day tommorow.
Now in its 27th year, No Smoking
Day encourages smokers to quit smoking, save thousands
of pounds and take the opportunity to find out about
the support available.
Dr West supported this year’s
No Smoking Day campaign, saying: “No Smoking Day
is a brilliant campaign to help and support smokers
who want to stop smoking. I’d like to encourage
smokers in Shrewsbury to break free on No Smoking Day
and give up cigarettes for good! As a doctor, I know
all too well the effects on health which smoking can
have. In the current economic climate, it also makes
financial sense. If you stop smoking today, within a
month you could be £180 better off.

Smoking Day go to nosmokingday.org.uk
