intervene when a man was assaulted to come forward.
Officers were called to the town
centre on Monday night following reports a man had been
attacked by a group of youths in Barker Street, near
The Bellstone.
The victim had made his way to
Castle Gates following the incident, allegedly followed
by the group, which was made up of both males and females,
and the police were called.
Two males in their mid-teens were
arrested on suspicion of assault at the time and have
been interviewed before being released on police bail
pending further enquiries.
Constable Alex Sheldon, the investigating officer, said
CCTV was being examined from both the town and The Bellstone.
She said: “It has been reported
that someone in The Bellstone attempted to intervene
in the incident and separate the group of youths from
the victim between about 9pm and 9.30pm that night.
“I would urge this person
to contact police on 0300 333 3000 as a matter of urgency
as they may have important information for our investigation.

Work is now underway on major repairs to the surface
of the Wharfage car park in Ironbridge as part of a
makeover of the area in time for the new tourist season.
To date £15,000 has been invested in a major
declutter and refurbishment of the historic town which
has seen redundant poles and signposts removed and street
lights replaced.
This latest phase of the project, which is part of
Telford & Wrekin Council’s Borough Towns Initiative,
will see the Wharfage car park significantly improved,
and is due to be completed by the start of the 2010
tourism season at Easter.
Other finishing touches already completed include the
repainting of all posts such as floodlights, lampposts
and CCTV camera supports, which are now in a new heritage
black colour in keeping with the historic nature of
the World Heritage site.
New complementary signage is also being put up in the
car parks and the existing street lights have been upgraded
throughout the Wharfage and central Ironbridge to new
heritage style lights, all fitting in with the period
features of Ironbridge but incorporating the latest
energy saving technology.

Telford and Wrekin’s family placement team are
asking people from across the borough to help make a
big difference to the life of a disabled child and their
family.
People who are interested in offering short breaks to
support disabled children and their families are invited
to attend the Share Care Celebration held at the Shropshire
Golf Club at 10am till 12 noon on Saturday 6 March.
The event marks the start of the national Share The
Care week (7-14 March) and will provide visitors with
an opportunity to gain information straight from the
horse’s mouth by talking to families who provide
a helping hand to disabled children.
A short film - introduced by BBC Radio 1 DJ and TV presenter
Jo Whiley - about the opportunities available in short
breaks for children will be featured at the event.
Children and young people involved in the event will
be given Share Care awards. Refreshments will be available
at the celebration.
Short breaks are the support service most requested
by families of disabled children. They are regular opportunities
for families to have a break from caring while the child
enjoys spending time with a short break carer.
They provide opportunities for disabled children to
make new friends, develop their independence and enjoy
new activities.
Councillor Stephen Burrell, cabinet member for children
and young people, said: “The Share Care Celebration
aims to reach out to potential volunteers who could
help support families with children with disabilities
but also raise awareness of Share Care week.
“I fully support any event that aims to improve
the lifestyle of the borough’s children and young
people.”

To celebrate world book day, children are being invited
to go along to the to Pengwern Books in the Market Hall
to discover a strange and wonderful thing tomorrow from
10.30am.
Some dragons have decided that they really like the
Market and have set up home in some of the stalls. Susan
and Hilary at Pengwern Books need help from as many
children as possible to find out where the dragons are
hiding.
In return for this help there will be stories, craft
activities and refreshments for everyone.
Children will also be able to redeem their World Book
Day Voucher on one of the special titles at Pengwern
Books.
Children and staff from the Column Nursery will be
making their annual World Book Day visit to the shop
at 2pm. Other children and parents are welcome to join
in too.
Owner Susan Caroline said “World Book Day is
an important event in the bookselling calendar. Anything
that encourages children to pick up a book and get lost
in the stories is a Good Thing. We always try to do
our bit here at Pengwern and the Market Hall is adding
its own flavour to this year’s celebrations.”

Police in Market Drayton are seeking the owners of two
items of lost property handed in to the station after
being found near one of the town’s supermarkets.
A diamond engagement-style ring, which is small in
size and appears to be some years old, was found near
the entrance to Morrison’s supermarket in Maer
Lane last Thursday.
And a Sony Ericsson mobile phone has also been handed
in after being found in the car park at around 2pm on
Sunday. The battery was dead and the SIM card is protected
with a PIN so officers have been unable to identify
the telephone number.
Anyone who thinks they may be the owner of either item

Lynn Roberts receiving
her award from Prince Edward. |
Staff
from Chirk Castle’s Education team have recently
been presented with a prestigious award at Windsor
Castle. Lynn Roberts,
Education Officer and Helen Roberts, Education
Assistant were presented with the Sandford Award
for Education in Heritage by HRH Prince Edward,
Earl of Wessex, in St George’s Hall, Windsor
Castle, on 15th February.
Lynn, Helen and their team
of dedicated Education volunteers at the 700 year
old fortress show over 10,000 school children
around the National Trust property each year,
helping them to experience life during the Tudor
and Stuart ages. School children can also discover
what it was like to be an evacuee during the Second
World War.
This is the forth time in
a row that the Castle has been recognised for
excellence in education. Lynn Roberts says, “Chirk
Castle offers wonderful opportunities for life
long learning. We aim to offer a high standard
of experiential learning and have a high quality
handling collection to help us achieve this, including
replica costumes, historic toys and other items.”
Lynn and her team aim to
use the Castle as a class room, delivering a focused
education programme, which is challenging, relevant,
imaginative and enjoyable. Children get to explore
history at first hand, wearing period costumes
and taking part in ‘hands on’ activities
such as posy making and doing the washing in the
