It’s been some time hasn’t
it! I can only apologise. I got a little bit stuck in
America, when I decided to take my first proper holiday
in a considerable amount of time. I went out to LA with
my friend Emma, to do a small road trip en route to
Coachella Festival, but seems Mother Nature made sure
I was going to have time to relax after all….even
if it was going to cost me more financially!!
I have to say – I had the most AMAZING time, so
I shouldn’t really complain, but I’ll be
honest – we were completely oblivious to the volcano
erupting in Iceland, as American news failed to notice
it.
I received texts on the Friday & Saturday, from
Elvis (my boyfriend – not the singer) and my dad
explaining there may be problems with our return flights,
due to the closure of Heathrow, but they didn’t
know the extent as to how long it would remain closed.
Little did we know it would be a while! On the Sunday
morning before heading to the festival, I spent some
time on the phone, waiting to talk to Virgin Customer
Service. I eventually got us on a flight back on the
2nd May. We were originally supposed to fly on 19th
April!?? It was only then that I started to worry –
and everything started to sink in a bit more. What were
we going to do for the extra days?? Where were we going
to stay? How were we going to pay for it? Joys of being
freelance include – no work, no pay!
Decided it best to enjoy the rest
of Coachella and then head back to LA, stay in Santa
Monica, and worry about it when we got there, at least
we could spend days walking around in the fresh air,
and not have to worry about paying for taxi’s
everywhere!
It was strange bumping into other stranded people around
the place, who may have overheard Emma or myself discussing
our situation. It was pretty much all anyone could talk
about. It was kind of reassuring knowing we weren’t
the only ones – but still slightly unnerving that
we physically couldn’t get back. Don’t get
me wrong, if you were loaded, you could get back the
following weekend, but I didn’t have a spare £1,500
unfortunately. Emma and myself were worrying that everyone
back home would be thinking we were kicking back and
having an extended holiday, but it really wasn’t
like that….even though I randomly ended up in
Mexico!

We
spent the days taking cycle rides along the seafront,
and we even went to the cinema. I finally saw
Alice in Wonderland in 3D! We were reaching the
point of really needing to get back, but we kept
calling on a daily basis and eventually made it
onto an earlier flight on 28th April, but that
meant we had to get a connecting flight from LA
to New York, and then New York to Heathrow. All
flights were delayed, and so I missed my bus back
home and had to hang around for an extra 3 hrs
at Heathrow, with sleep deprivation – having
not washed….or brushed my teeth come to
think of it!?
As you may have heard by now – I am in fact
leaving at the end of the week, so this will be
my last installment I’m afraid. It’s
not been an easy decision, as I genuinely have
had a brilliant 2 years here with you. It seems
it was one of those decisions that I needed to
make now, or forever hold my peace. Elvis has
managed to gain employment in France, and so we
are going to attempt to see what we can do over
there. Admittedly I’m scared about what
work I’ll end up doing, as there is nothing
quite like this job – but if it don’t
kill you, it’s definitely got to make you
stronger…..right?
Thanks for a great
couple of years.
