The Shropshire Business Awards, a glittering event in its 14th year, run by the Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, was held at Telford’s International Centre, and was attended by around 640 people from the local business community. It is the largest business awards outside of London. GWR Fasteners won the Best New Business Award on the night, an award which was open to businesses who started after January 2009. The company had to demonstrate to a panel of judges who visited their work premises that it had strength of vision, evidence of financial success, ongoing product development strategy to secure a long-term future, and to show factors which gave the business a sustained competitive advantage.
In addition to this prestigious award, in January 2014, GWR Fasteners Limited took delivery of their first Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machine and this was possible through the help of the Government’s Regional Growth Fund (RGF). The fund is a £3.2 billion competitive government fund operating across England, supporting businesses of all sizes. The RGF was launched in June 2010 and is a key channel for achieving the Government’s aim to rebalance the economy across sectors and regions. From all the companies in the UK who have had access to the RGF, GWR Fasteners Limited were chosen as one of six companies to feature as a case study in the Government’s RGF Annual Monitoring Report 2014 which was released on the 22nd July 2014 and is sent to Parliament, Ministers and other businesses across the country.
Gary, GWR’s Managing Director, said “We have had an amazing few weeks. To have won a Shropshire Business Award when there’s so many successful businesses in this county has totally astounded us. The awards night was fantastic and we’re still being showered with all the positive effects as a result of it. Also, to have been chosen by the Government to feature in their report will have far-reaching exposure for us. We feel honoured and proud of both achievements and we will continue to work hard in growing our company and becoming a major UK manufacturer.”
